Since Etch, mkelf-linux produces files that a thin client verified to work with
older releases can no longer recognize.

Additionally, LTSP developers pointed out that a number of patches were merged 
into the Ubuntu package that Debian could benefit from. Some of those patches 
fix this issue; they clearly remember having encountered a similarly broken 
mkelf-linux a few Ubuntu releases ago and patched it to make it work again. 

They suspect that LTSP fails to build usable ELF boot images on Etch because 
these patches were never merged back into Debian, or because the package was
never rebuilt using a recent GCC immediately before the Etch release.
