Bug#439276: idesk: X11/Xorg testing crash with intel driver 865G hardware.

2007-08-26 Thread Brice Goglin
Hi Bill,

Please describe exactly what's happening here, when doing what, how, ...

Is this bug a freeze of the machine or just a crash of the X server? If
it is a crash, we need a backtrace to debug the problem. There should be
one at the end of /var/log/Xorg.0.log (or Xorg.0.log.old if X already
restarted). A better backtrace may be obtained by attaching gdb through
ssh from another machine (with 'gdb -p $(pidof X)') and entering 'bt
full' after the crash.

Also please send the whole output of /usr/share/bug/xserver-xorg/script
3>&1 so that we see your whole config and log.

Brice

Hi,

Does the problem also happen if you don't load the intelfb kernel
driver?

Cheers,
Julien

Sorry, I had read this briefly and thought you said to not use the
"intel" Xorg driver. I have intelfb built into my kernel. So I used
"video=intelfb:off", I think that does the same thing.

I have been using this for a while and the crash does not seem to
re-occur. The crash is not consistent, so I can not fully know if the
problem is gone or just more rare. I have started and stopped X about
20 times. Usually, it would occur after 4-5 attempts and rarely about
10 (with the intelfb in use on ttys).

Interestingly, I also had the crash while starting X from a frame
buffer using intelfb.

My text consoles are now very small, but I don't have any crashing.

Let me know if you want any more information or testing.

Regards,
Bill Pringlemeir.

Somehow I'm not surprised. The interaction between intelfb and the X
driver is a mess, and it's probably not an X driver bug. Do you think
we can close this bug if the crash isn't reproducible without intelfb?

Cheers,
Julien

2007-08-30 Thread Bill Pringlemeir

This bug looks similar to #427811, and #431373. Sorry, I had
originally thought this was an iDesk problem and did not look at the
xserver-xorg-video-intel tickets. Maybe it should be confirmed that
the other reporters are using a framebuffer virtual console.

Thanks,
Bill Pringlemeir.

Certainly.
