Bug#444433: xserver-xorg-video-intel: Xinerama and Dualhead won't work with new intel driver (old i810 worked)

 I guess it's the same problem than #443274 with intel instead of the ati
 driver.

I don't think so. With the intel driver, the server crashes as soon as
you have an Option Xinerama on in your xorg.conf, even if it is a
simple single head configuration. The server just dies with a backtrace
in the log file.

This bug corresponds to
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10299 in the upstream BTS.

This one is NOT going to ever be fixed, just forget about it.

What might be fixed one day is RandR support for multiple boards (!=
multiple displays), and that's what you seemed to be talking about
earlier, that's what #443274 is about.

meh. we should at least fix it to not crash.

Bug#444433: xserver-xorg-video-intel: Xinerama and Dualhead won't work with new intel driver (old i810 worked)

2008-09-24 Thread Tino Keitel
Hi,

RandR 1.2 is not a sufficent replacement for Xinerama. I need dualhead
with 2 graphics cards, which is is not possible with RandR 1.2. It is a
planned feature of RandR 1.3 AFAIK. And from my understanding, even if
RandR 1.3 is supported by the Intel driver in the future, it requires
the other card's driver to also support RandR 1.3. As long as this
isn't implemented, Xinerama is still the only way to get dual head
using more than one card.

Tino

 Unstable? (look in /var/log/dpkg.log or /var/log/aptitude)

I used unstable but because of this problem (and haven't enough time to
look on it) i used a very long time the old driver (set xorg on hold).
Now I needed a new install.
That's the old deb i used before xserver-xorg-video-i810_2%3a1.7.2-4_i386.deb

2007-09-28 Thread Simon Effenberg
Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel
Version: 2:2.1.1-4
Severity: normal

Since using the newer video-intel driver i can't get my external monitor
to work. Either in dualhead nor in xinerama i can start X.

That's what I got (last lines of my Xorg.1.log):

II) intel(0): Continuing with default 262144kB VideoRam instead of 13 kB.
(II) intel(0): Kernel reported 488960 total, 14474 used
(II) intel(0): I830CheckAvailableMemory: 1897944 kB available
(**) intel(0): VideoRam: 262144 KB
(II) intel(0): Attempting memory allocation with tiled buffers and
   large DRI memory manager reservation:
(II) intel(1): Allocating 0 scanlines for pixmap cache

Backtrace:

3: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//intel_drv.so [0xb7ae8a2a]

10: /usr/bin/X(FontFileCompleteXLFD+0x205) [0x8073991]

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11.  Server aborting

The problem seems to be in i830_memory.c
At line 429 you see:

...
for (scan = pI830-memory_list; scan-next != NULL; scan = scan-next) {
mem-offset = ROUND_TO(scan-end, alignment);
if ((flags  NEED_PHYSICAL_ADDR)  mem-offset  pI830-stolen_size) {
...

This works perfectly for the first display but when the memory for the second
should
be allocated pI830-memory_list is NULL

Hope I get some help 'cause I'm not that deep in it to know where the
problem is.

Mfg
Simon
