Using quodlibet with the album view I found that only a fraction of the album covers would display in the sidebar. The covers had no trouble displaying in the upper right corner when the song played though. It turned out that I had some directories where the .folder.jpg file was a broken symlink to central cover image. The broken symlink caused quodlibet to stop scanning and loading the cover images. Removing these broken symlinks fixed the problem.
