fine; although the WSOD issues probably deserve a few bits of safeties
in the wrapper script IMO.

Yes, I did upgrade fglrx, rebuilt the kernel module, but forgot to add
it in /etc/modules (last times, I had always modprobed it manually, out
of distrust, but after several weeks of runtime, I grew confident enough
to just assume it was there...)
Not quite sure the last upgrade was supposed to change much, it just got
pulled in with the last upgrade. What was new is that I had some time to
play with compiz, which I had not had beforehand.

will keep trying whenever AMD pushes something new.

Bug#451706: compiz yields a blank white screen

ran the gconftool set-up line, as a matter of preemptive troubleshooting
(might be a good idea to check the presence of the "decorate" plugin as
part of /usr/bin/compiz, by the way)

> > The fglrx driver may very well be the trouble maker...

The problems described there indeed look like it, indeed!
fglrxinfo showed the problem immediately; the fglrx kernel driver was
*not* loaded, so GL fell back on Mesa, which produced the WSOD.

(this exchange gave me a few ideas, see #451756 )

now that I not only ran "m-a a-i fglrx-driver" but modprobed it as well
(duh), running compiz --replace yields:

GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is not available with direct rendering.
GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is not available with indirect rendering.
Aborting!

Manually grepping through glxinfo gives that GLX_EXT_texture_from_bitmap
is both a server and client glx extension.

running glxinfo with LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1 breaks with
X Error of failed request: GLXBadContext
Major opcode of failed request: 144 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request: 5 (X_GLXMakeCurrent)
Serial number of failed request: 16
Current serial number in output stream: 16

I suspected that the tests "-lt 3" in /usr/bin/compiz might have been
bogus; so I tried commenting out the "exit 1" there. Result:

/usr/bin/compiz.real (core) - Fatal: GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is
missing
/usr/bin/compiz.real (core) - Error: Failed to manage screen: 0
/usr/bin/compiz.real (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on
display :0.0

Seems #451706 is probably not a bug (save for a couple more safeties,
such as refusing to run if the system appears to want to run with fglrx
but fglrx is not present and/or flgrx is here but the actual GLX
renderer is Mesa ==> White Screen of Death), but a failure of fglrx to
provide the required extensions, despite what I understood as recent
positive claims.

As a bonus, it would be good if, upon fatal exit
of /usr/bin/compiz.real, /usr/bin/compiz attempted to restart a useable
WM (might be a tricky information to grab)

Thanks

http://bgoglin.livejournal.com/11253.html could possibly help a bit, but
your problem looks much worse than what we usually observe.

Right. Could be related to http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=595213

Bug#451706: compiz yields a blank white screen

2007-11-17 Thread Cyrille Chépélov
Package: compiz
Version: 0.5.2-2
Severity: important

On this system, running "compiz --replace" returns an empty screen, with
only the mouse pointer. The mouse seems active, does change according to
what is guessed to be under it, and applications may apparently be run.

FWIW, the pointers shown did follow the mouse pointer theme as set up in
GNOME.

The fglrx driver may very well be the trouble maker...
