Bug#453041: Country Liechtenstein not in country list when selecting German as language in installer

CC: to madduck.
IIRC he is rewriting the locales for Switzerland, so
probably he could do quickly also for Liechtenstein too.

BTW madduck: there is some news about the project?

When installing debian, when choosing German as language, the country
Liechtenstein isn't in the list for German speaking countries. It would be
nice also Liechtenstein having in this list, because German is the only
official language in Liechtenstein.

Countries that are displayed after the language selection are
countries for which a locale with the given language exists in the
locales package. Not countries for which the given language is an
official language. This is often the same list because, of course,
locales have been written for language/country combinations that make
sense.

The solution to this problem is writing a de_LI locale, which would
definitely make sense.

Writing locales is not that hard: pick up a similar locale on your
system (/usr/share/i18n/locales/de_DE) and modify the
country-dependent parts to fit the new country. Then name it
appropriately (here de_LI).

It of course needs some knwoledge of the said country and the said language.

The only tricky part is that locales files use U notations which
makes writing them quite tricky. Thankfully, Denis Barbier wrote the
attached scripts, in the past, that help converting file back and
forth from UTF-8 to U notation.

In case madduck is too busy elsewhere, I can quite probably hack down
a quick locale for de_LI. After all, this is only a matter of getting
information about the country which may be easily found here and
there. The language part is of course assumed to be well covered by
picking another german-based locale (either de_CH or de_DE...they're
probably similar when it comes at language even if some would say that
German in Switzerland is different from German in Germany...at least
for written language, I guess both are identical).

It is not only about languages, but also about numbers and currencies and
other conventions. Here a proposal for de_LI. Btw

*that* I knew..:)

What I wanted to say is that even without being a native speaker, It's
pretty easy to adapt de_CH to de_LI as long as one takes care to pick
up the country-related data (including local conventions...) from
easily available information.

And, as your proposed locale showsthere are not that many things
to change, indeedas even the currency is the same in CH and LI.

To locales maintainers: I think you can quite safely adopt that locale
file.

There's a little mistake; In the line int_prefix is a to much.
The rest seems all correct to me, thanks a lot. I would have done it
myself, but you were a little faster...
I think this bug report can be closed, when a local maintainer adopts
the file.

So the file would be now (I only changed the int_prefix line):

Bug#453041: Country Liechtenstein not in country list when selecting German as language in installer

2007-11-26 Thread Josef Vogt

Package: installation-reports
Version:

When installing debian, when choosing German as language, the country
Liechtenstein isn't in the list for German speaking countries. It would
be nice also Liechtenstein having in this list, because German is the
only official language in Liechtenstein.

When choosing other, it is possible to select it then, but the local
keyboard settings seem to be wrong, because they are German instead of
Swiss German (should be the same as selecting Switzerland as country).

I am using Debian GNU/Linux Lenny (Testing), kernel 2.6.22-2-686

Greetings
Josef
