Yes, exactly as the subject of the bug report suggests.

Have you considered a solution based on dpkg-divert or update-alternatives?

Why? The files will not be installed into the same locations, so neither
diversions nor alternatives are necessary.

Best wishes

Yes, I think so. And since you have already implemeted it, here only
one minor comment. I think from a systematic point of view it might
make sense to include the versions of supp-pdf.tex and supp-mis.tex
from the context version that shipped with the given texlive version.
That way texlive-metapost is sort of consistent with what is shipped
upstream but (potentially) newer versions are still used if one
installs the context package.

Hi all,

On So, 10 Feb 2008, giuseppe bonacci wrote:

 \convertMPtoPDF error.

This is a bug in the 2005 version which we will and cannot fix, it is
not a security update.

In the 2007 version the following error is issued:
Cannot convert #1 from MPS to PDF.
The support file `supp-pdf.tex' is missing

The graphics driver for pdfTeX needs `supp-pdf.tex' (and
`supp-mis.tex')
to convert MP to PDF.
These files are part of ConTeXt and can also be found here:
  CTAN:macros/pdftex/graphics/supp-pdf.tex
  CTAN:macros/pdftex/graphics/supp-mis.tex
You'll get more errors if you'll continue now.

supp-pdf.tex is maintained in context and shipped there. If you want
automatic conversion you either have to install context, or copy the
file. Or you do manual mp2pdf.

texlive-metapost does not ship the above files. However,
gzipped copies of the missing files are present in
 /usr/share/doc/texlive-base-bin/pdftex/manual/samplepdf (doc tree of
texlive-base-bin), and copying them in ~/texmf/tex solves the problem.

These are files used for generating the documentation and are not the
latest release of these files.

What about moving the files to their proper place?

They are at their proper place.

By the way, texlive-context has both files, although I believe
texlive-metapost should not depend on (nor recommend) texlive-context.

That is right, and the error message above states that if you want that
you need to install context. But this is only valid for 2007.

TL 2005 will rest as is, it is in stable and not a serious problem to be
fixed by security updates.

Best wishes

Norbert

Hi Norbert
Do you mean mptopdf (also in package context)? After all, it seems
that even in the modular world of texlive, ConTeXt has to be installed
anyway...

Unless you decide to split cont-mpd (200 Kb) from the rest of context
(32 MB in lenny), then make texlive-metapost Suggest cont-mpd and context
Depend on cont-mpd.

Best regards,

No, I mean:
mpost foo.mp(texlive-metapost)
eps2pdf (texlive-extra-utils)
or
ps2pdf (ghostscript)

Yes, some things are easier when you install context.

Unfortunately the above commands will not work on mp files that use
TeX fonts, since gs cannot resolve the font names that are put into
the file. Being able to include mp files in pdflatex is the prime
reason why I have context installed ...

Bug#465107: texlive-metapost: missing supp-pdf.tex and supp-mis.tex

2008-02-10 Thread giuseppe bonacci
Package: texlive-metapost
Version: 2005.dfsg.2-12
Severity: normal

I ran pdflatex first; mpost myfigs; pdflatex first, and the
second pdflatex invocation died with a ! Undefined control sequence
\convertMPtoPDF error.

The problem is due to the fact that
/usr/share/texmf-texlive/tex/latex/graphics/pdftex.def
(in texlive-latex-base) contains the statement
\InputIfFileExists{supp-pdf}{}{}%, which (I guess) looks for
supp-pdf.tex and silently ignores it (and its dependency supp-mis.tex)
if it does not exist in the path.

texlive-metapost does not ship the above files. However,
gzipped copies of the missing files are present in
/usr/share/doc/texlive-base-bin/pdftex/manual/samplepdf (doc tree of

That sounds sensible to me, but I think Norbert (now the main maintainer
of TeXlive) had a reason to do it like this. Let's wait until he returns
(which might take a couple of weeks).
