When I start emacs, characters display as an empty box. See screenshot:

If I go to Options | Mule | Set Font/Fontset and select Courier 14 pt,
characters on the main window start showing properly. But still
mouseover icons on the toolbar pops up a string of empty boxes.
If I log in as another user on this same computer, Emacs starts
showing OK characters.
I have tried to fix this by:
- installing all reasonable looking font packages
- removing all ~/.emacs* files
- removing with -rf: ~/.gnome* ~/.gtk* ~/.gconf*
- removing ~/.fontconfig
- playing with /etc/X11/xorg.conf
I don't have ~/.Xdefaults. I tried checking also other files in my
home directory that could maybe affect emacs and fonts.
Originally emacs complained on startup about missing fonts. I got rid
of this message with the font package installation fest.
Warning: Missing charsets in String to FontSet conversion
I had this same problem late last year, then it disappeared after I
had messed with xorg.conf enough. Never did figure out what change was
the right one. Problem came back two months ago and I even tried other
editors, but I want Emacs.
