I guess not. Qt4 will keep using webkit as long as it's in the archive, Qt5
is still using Webkit for 5.2.x. The change may come in 5.3.x.

That being said, I would **love** to see Qt using the system
 webkit/whatever, but I'm afraid I'm not sure it's doable, and I'll
 certainly not code that.

OK, late reply, it has already been closed.

I don't see how this is even possible. WebKitGTK+ and WebKitQt are
not just API layers on top of WebCore (which is where the bulk of the
WebKit code is):

- WebCore it does not provide a stable API on top of which the
Qt/GTK+/EFL/etc. ones are written. As a matter of fact, it changes
  every week.

- Although WebCore itself is largely platform-independent, significant
parts of its code are not.

And this is not something that can be fixed because it is like that
by design.

I know, it's definitely not possible at all. Sucks :-/

i would like to see the qt, gtk, and webkit.org webkit libraries merge
at some point. does debian really want to maintain and support three
(mostly) duplicate code bases?

obviously this would be a goal for all of the webkit upstreams to
undertake. maybe debian should make a statement or request
encouraging them to do so?

It seems some people want to have QtWebKit shipped from webkit.org in Debian
archive with QtWebKit shipped from Qt.

 Well, I can't stop them as i think it's useless, so i I reopen/reassign to
 webkit.

I'll also add that the qt port diverges enough from original WebKit that
we shouldn't replace one by the other. And having 2 sources for the Qt
port is not something I want. Fortunately, they are converging (AFAICS
from the changelogs, a bunch has already been pushed on trunk), but the
WebKit released in Qt 4.4 will still definitely be different from WebKit
trunk, though WebKit in next Qt might be more like WebKit trunk (though
nothing is sure here. Trolltech might just fork again when preparing
next Qt)

Also, both ports (qt and gtk+) don't have the same release schedules.
Actually, there hasn't been a formal release of the gtk+ port.

Anyways, let's wait and see how things settle. In the meanwhile, this is
wontfix.

Mike

Hi,

please discuss with upstream people and inform yourself before making
assumption. There's no good reason to ship both version or to ship QtWebKIT
from webkit.org. QtWebKit shipped with Qt is the version to be shipped as
recommended by TT.

cheers,

Fathi

Bug#479851: qt4-x11: should use external webkit library

2008-05-07 Thread Matthew Rosewarne
Wait just a minute here; this should not be so readily dismissed. The
libwebkit* were only recently renamed from libwebkitgtk*. Since WebKit
itself is not toolkit-specific, could that renaming please be reverted?

Additionally, there's no reason why the Trolltech version and the WebKit.org
version cannot both be shipped, either by using a different name or the
alternatives system. Qt 4.4 ships its own included copy of WebKit is because
Qt must stay ABI-compatible throughout each major version. Applications that
do not need that ABI stability could use the WebKit.org version.

Bug#479851: qt4-x11: should use external webkit library

2008-05-06 Thread Michael Gilbert
Package: qt4-x11
Version: 4.4.0~rc1-5
Severity: important

qt4-xll should use the already-packaged libwebkit-1.0 library, rather than
repackaging webkit separately.

this has a couple major advantages. it reduces duplicated data (on the
debian archives, on the user's system, and in memory). also, it reduces
duplicated maintenance overhead (only one maintainer needed to support
the single code base). and finally, only one package needs to be
updated to fix security issues (see CVE-2008-1025 [1] where the webkit
library already has the fix, but qt4-x11 remains vulnerable).
