Bug#481455: firefox complains about missing std c++ library after system upgrade

2008-05-28 Thread Vincent Danjean
  Hi,

[Note: I'm not at all involved in the packaging of this software]

The regular system upgrade removes the C++ stdt library which is need
 by firefox.

libstdc++.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

I suggest _not_ to remove libraries which are needed by applications in
 Linux userland.

How could apt or dpkg know about the requirement of non-debian software ?

I hope that you do not suggest to scan all applications/libraries on the
system (including /opt and /home) before any library removal ?

The correct fix would be to package the software in a Debian package (official
or not if the license does not permit it) so dependencies can be correctly and
automatically managed.

  Regards,
Vincent

PS: note that firefox is already packaged as iceweasel is Debian...
