The packages for 2009 are quasi a complete new implementation, some
things got lost, yes, that is life.

Correct.

Yes we will include a patch to what is currently in TL, and later
when we rebase the packages we can drop it again.

Best wishes

Well, the patch was not Debian-specific. We just updated the
xetex.def from upstream (the new 0.93). As TL 2009 contains a more
recent version we believed it would contain the fix. Unfortunately
the xetex.def was probably pulled from CTAN *after* the fix was
removed and *before* it was re-introduced.

I'm not sure, if we should re-introduce the patch. On the one hand
we'd like to have a bug-free system on the other hand we don't have
the man power to keep the texmf tree of a system up-to-date between
the TL releases. We'll do it if it is really necessary (i.e. in case
of urgent bugs), but not for withlist items.

I've done that, yes.

Is there a particular reason why the Debian-specific patch was dropped
when the package was updated to TL 2009? Is it too much of a burden to
continue carrying the patch to the Debian tree?

Thanks,

Seems, TL was released a little bit to early.

I resurrected this old bug; it seems that after upgrading to texlive
2009 from unstable (texlive-base 2009-6) the fix got dropped.

Strangely enough, xetex.def now has v0.93 but a *different* one. I guess
xetex was forking the code?

I've reapplied manually the patch attached to this bug report to the new
version and verified that it still works as intended.

texlive-base release will include the fix.

Ok, fine with me. So in any way there will be no regression but at least
a partial improvement. I will give it a try.

Do you think that this is ok to be put into texlive for debian? THe
only

thing making me think about is that there is written
"default driver in xetex 0.997"
while debian has 0.996-patch2.

The xetex version is relevant primarily for Mac OS X, where pre-0.997
versions used xdv2pdf by default and definitely couldn't support .eps
images unless the user specifically reconfigured things.

So for Debian, that's not a concern; you'll always be using
xdvipdfmx. However, I don't recall offhand whether there were any
significant bug-fixes in xdvipdfmx that you'd need in order for this
to actually work, or if it's always been supported if you had a
suitable xetex.def.

I'm away from home and office at the moment, without much chance to
test things. So I'd suggest that if you want to consider including
this, give it a try and see what happens with your current binaries,
and the updated xetex.def. I think there's a good chance it'll work
but can't promise anything right now, sorry.

Jonathan
