the vm is W98SE. It remaps the keys as follows:
 down arrow - windows menu
left arrow - ??? cursor disappears
 right arrow - ignored
 up arrow - ignored
right Enter key - down arrow cursor control
 print-screen - remapped to delete
 delete - ignored
 pgup - remapped to /
 scroll lock - ?
 control-right - pgdn

 in a Kubuntu VM:
 up arrow - opens KSnapshot
 left-right arrows ignored
right return key - down arrow
 print-screen - remapped to delete
 pgup - remapped to /
 control-right - pgdn

The Linux host is working correctly now. (it was doing the same thing
until the latest batch of updates done a few hours ago)

Do you have such problems with latest X packages from unstable?

The above can't really be caused by the video driver anyway. Sounds more
like an XKB configuration issue.

Bug#486330: xserver-xorg-video-vmware: it remaps keys in the Windows VM

At 05:33 AM 6/15/08, you wrote:

the vm is W98SE, and the host is Linux

Then xserver-xorg-video-vmware is completely irrelevant. It is a package to
be installed in VMware guests as a video driver.

OTOH, there is a keyboard-related error in your log:

(EE) Error compiling keymap (server-0)
(EE) XKB: Couldn't compile keymap

Could you please update xkeyboard-config to the latest version and retest?

I reported the problem against xserver-xorg-vmware because the keyboard
usability problem is unique to the VMware Server session, I wasn't aware
that it was a video driver. Thanks. This is what happened when I tried
complying with your request:

the difference between the situation before the update and now is that
kdm.log still shows the following, but the Linux host keyboard works
anyway... but it doesn't work in the VMware Server VMs.

Also note that after more use, I found that the Linux keyboard still has to
be restarted occassionally, but far less often than previously.
