Is there any way to reproduce this bug with the current version of rtorrent
in sid? It seems that recreating the circumstances of this bug (if it is
there yet) is not trivial. Or, perhaps, newer versions of curl have already
fixed this?

(If so, that might indicate that the machine is just heavily swapping instead of completely hung) On x86, this can be done from a text console (Switch to a text VT with Ctrl-Alt-F1) by pressing: Alt-SysRq-? (in that order, and sysrq is the print screen key) If the kernel is still alive, it will respond with a help message. You can try executing an OOM kill, which will kill the program using the most RAM, with Alt-SysRq-f Please check if that will help you recover from rtorrent hanging your kernel.
