Timo, can you try to mount the filesystem as ext2 (rather than ext3) and tell me whether you still see this problem. There have been some reports on the debian-arm list about problems that sound similar: http://lists.debian.org/debian-arm/2008/08/msg00099.html -- Martin Michlmayr http://www.cyrius.com/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. * Timo Jyrinki [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2008-08-06 14:50]: I can confirm that 2.6.26 does not have the eSATA hang problem anymore. So I can attach the external disk closure to either USB or eSATA without problem attaching/mounting. Timo, do you think you could report these problems directly to [EMAIL PROTECTED] However, I still have the same problem with some of the directories on the disk, regardless of whether it's attached via USB or eSATA. I tried the following, all actions done on my laptop and then checked the result when attaching the disk to the QNAP: 1. Tarring a few problematic directories and untarring on ext3-formatted USB stick, same directory structure : Does not show the problem on the USB stick. 2. As above, but untarring on the same disk in different directory : Does not show the problem 3. As above, but removing the problematic dirs in place and untarring from the archive : The problematic directories stay problematic 4. Moving a few problematic dirs to another directory : They start working 5. Creating a few additional dirs in the original directory, then moving the moved directories back to the original directory too : The created dirs work, but the moved-back dirs are again problematic 6. Sorted by inode ls -i, the problematic dirs are not sequential. Ok, so I couldn't figure out anything, but now while I'm writing this I tried ls -U, ie. unsorted ls, and found out that all the problematic dirs are in sequential order, with line numbers 60-68. There was actually a ninth problematic directory, which I moved now away while testing. But now there are only eight problematic dirs. It does not seem to be related to those index numbers though, since I found other unaccessible subdirectories in other places. Curiously, I found that I had two subdirectories under different directories which had the same name näytettävät (to be shown), and both of them were unaccessible. Both of them were second of two subdirectories (among files) respectively, when viewing with ls -U. Attached is output (cutted in places marked as such) of ls -l and ls -U in the original problematic directory. Can you think of anything that could cause the problem, or any low level information on those directory entries I could somehow extract? As a sidenote, as only stderr messages have correctly formed non-ascii characters, kernel / something seems to lack some charset support. When going into directories with eg. cd A[tab], non-ascii characters are correctly shown. -Timo debian:/# ls -l mnt/CDt/ ls: cannot access mnt/CDt/CMX - Musiikin ystävälliset kasvot: No such file or directory ls: cannot access mnt/CDt/à - Metri: No such file or directory ls: cannot access mnt/CDt/Björk - Celebrating Wood and Metal: No such file or directory ls: cannot access mnt/CDt/Björk - It's Oh So Quiet (CD2): No such file or directory ls: cannot access mnt/CDt/Björk - It's Oh So Quiet (CD1): No such file or directory ls: cannot access mnt/CDt/Björk - Vespertine: No such file or directory ls: cannot access mnt/CDt/Röyksopp - The Understanding: No such file or directory ls: cannot access mnt/CDt/Björk - Telegram: No such file or directory ls: cannot access mnt/CDt/Björk - Jóga: No such file or directory total 568 dr-xr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Jan 5 2006 AFX - Hangable Auto Bulb ---cut--- dr-xr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Oct 1 2005 Bj??rk - Army of Me remixes and covers dr-xr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Aug 21 2005 Bj??rk - Bj??rk Gu??mundsd??ttir d? ? ???? * Frans Pop [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2008-07-31 18:19]: Yeah, you're right. oldsys-preseed has the following comment about this. I guess the question is whether the new localechooser deals properly locale not being preseeded in this situation. Should all work fine. Just drop the preseed. Okay, I can select the language now. However, most text still stays in English, although some things show up in the chosen language. -- Martin Michlmayr http://www.cyrius.com/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. That must be because anna has already been run before localechooser and thus unused translations have been deleted to save memory. To keep translations you'll have to unset DEBCONF_DROP_TRANSLATIONS. Quoting Martin Michlmayr ([EMAIL PROTECTED]): * Timo Jyrinki [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2008-07-21 21:53]: Only possible problem during installation I hit was that I wasn't able to choose Finnish as installation language. Maybe a feature of this installation method, not a bug? At one point there was possibility to choose language, I think - it asked for the continent and country but then continued when I selected Finland without giving a choice of language. After the installation, I ran dpkg-reconfigure locales manually. Christian, can you comment on this? I always forget what the implications of exluding localechooser from the initrd are. Normally, when localechooser is added, you should then get the prompt for language+country. Which is partly what Timo had, as he mentions being prompted for continent+country. (IIRC, this happens at a later step while in normal installs this happens at the very beginning of course) localechooser was quite deeply revamped during the etch-lenny release cycle so it could be likely that, for some reason, the language question is not askedwhich is probably not really intended but just something not enough tested when localechooser was modified. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

On Sun, 27 Jul 2008, Martin Michlmayr wrote: Can you reproduce this 100%? i.e. plugging in an USB disk will hang the machine? I tried this a bit more now. I couldn't reproduce the hang anymore when attaching an USB disk, only when using the eSATA connector. eSATA problems could be easily addressed to the experimental sata support, but I don't know why I had the same problem with USB before (I think I tried it two or three times back then). Anyway, the directory access problem is still there. I now checked with both a 1TB disk and 300GB disk, and both had the same sort of problems: d? ? ??? ? Ø - Metri etc. Is this a vfat filesystem? All are ext3. The HDD enclosure used is Icy Dock MB-664US-1S. -Timo -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I guess the question is whether the new localechooser deals properly locale not being preseeded in this situation. # localechooser yet needs a way to run after network-console; # in the meantime, preseed this information. However, don't preseed # countrychooser/country-name in order to force the installer to # prompt the user for a country when configuring the clock.
