Bug#491879: kwin does not launch automatically at starting an session (update/workaround)

2008-08-07 Thread Hans-J. Ullrich
I discovered, that ALL applications, which are running at the moment, when
the Save Settings-button is pressed, are mentioned to ksmserverrc.

This happens at logout.

ALL running applications are marked with a comma, so at next start they will
not be loaded (yes, kwin, too !).

Solution (workaround):

1. Save your settings and logout of KDE

2. open your ~/.kde/share/config/ksmserverrc withe an editor

3. remove the comma before the required applications

in this example, remove the comma before the word konsole

restartCommand2=,konsole,-session,117f0100010475125550017960004

so it looks like this

restartCommand2=konsole,-session,117f0100010475125550017960004

4. save and start KDE. Works !

I hope some developer might find out the reason for this wrong behaviour.

Good luck !

Hans

2008-08-06 Thread Hans-J. Ullrich
Hi all,

I found out, that there might be in the file

~/.kde/share/config/ksmserverrc the reason for this behaviour.
In this file there are some lines, like these:

restartStyleHint2=0

res

I discovered, that in the non-working session, there is a comma (the ,) set
in front of the word kwin at the lines, were kwin is mentioned. How and
who this comma is setting, I could not find out, but if you are removing it,
everything is working fine.

I think, the coders know more about it.

I hope this helps !

Kind regards

Hans

Hello,

Patrick, Adam, i do wonder whether this issue is related to:
 http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=492610

I dont get any windows, the only thing I get is a little delay (2s) in kde
splash at Loading the window manager (not to mention borderless windows
later ofc). Its happen every time when I try to load saved session.

what kernel version are you using?

2.6.25+14

My actualizations from the day it happend, Im 99% sure it was at 17.07
because log says that at 18.07 was first time I restarted machine just after
login. Will check my other machine later.

Can you send a output of:
dpkg -l | grep 3.5.9

too?

Interesting, will have to look further at the changes between -2 and -4.
If you upgrade you get the problem again? (in this case, downgrade :D)

So I came back home, downgraded my desktop and... it didnt work O.o
Still had this problem. But i remembered that I played with some
session settings at work. Setting Restore manually saved session and
then Save session in menu did the trick. Did some reboots and
logoffs, returned to Restore previous session and everything worked
just fine. Then upgraded, first reboot it worked. Sadly just first. I
loged off and kwin didnt start again.

This bug is becoming a headache :D
So I guess we can discard kdelibs update as the cause of the problem ?

Wild guess, can you try with up-to-date kdelibs to -4 and start your system
with a previous kernel image?
If the problem is still present i'm running out of ideas about what can be the
cause:(

Hmm, no. I wasnt clear enough. Im using kdelibs -4 now and everything
works fine (just had to save (destroyed by -6?) session at first). If
I upgrade to -6, problem starts again.

I'm using the 2.6.25 from Debian.
I talked to pinotree last week about this issue on IRC about this report
and without realy any reason it began to work.

If it would not appear again for me in the next week I'll close my report.

Bug#491879: kwin does not launch automatically at starting an session

2008-07-22 Thread Patrick Matthäi
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Package: kwin
Version: 4:3.5.9.dfsg.1-4
Severity: important

Hello,

I've got a fresh KDE3 installation (32 bit here).
kwin misses there everytime to start - I've to launch it with kdeinit
kwin first which is realy annoying and far from usability.

Closing my session in a clean way and restarting = same effect.

Xorg.0.log / kdm.log and .xsession-errors don't give any informations
about any problem.
