No, it was in gnome-terminal and it gets printed that way right from
the start, without any input, backspaces or otherwise. I just typed
the 'd' in the example, to make the lack of trailing whitespace
 visible in the bugreport. :)

Can you reproduce this? Otherwise I cannot see how this is happening.
Are you sure this is not a font problem or something wrong with your
terminal emulator? Marking appropriately for now.

You can use this test case:

  wget http://people.debian.org/~guillem/pkg-conff-prompt-0.deb
  dpkg -i pkg-conff-prompt-0.deb
  wget http://people.debian.org/~guillem/pkg-conff-prompt-1.deb
  dpkg -i pkg-conff-prompt-1.deb

this should give you a conffile prompt.

thanks,
guillem

That string has not changed for a while so the problem comes from
elsewhere.

Kernel: Linux 2.6.26 (SMP w/2 CPU cores; PREEMPT)
 Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8)
 Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash

Are you running this on a bare linux console? If so, utf-8 input
did not use to work quite well, and some times the console would not
track properly the multibyte sequences and remove more than needed,
on back spaces.
