Michel and I think this looks like papering over the real bug, so I'll
reopen this until we find out what the underlying issue is.
The version of the protocol headers used to build the server and lib
shouldn't affect compatibility.

You're right, it looks like I misread one of the commits, although if
the rebuild fixed the problem then a version mismatch of some sort is
probably a cause.
