thanks for caring about the problem. Yes, so far nobody has reacted
to the report, and yes, the problem does still exist, no magical
fixing or auto-healing.
On the contrary, when installing Debian "Squeeze" on our systems. I
added printers ot the type Lexmark T 650 (they dropped the 'Optra',
but these are direct descendants of the Optra T Series) to it. They
show the exact same (erroneous) behaviour.
To summarize: We have (Lexmark) printers with two trays in addition
to the manual/multipurpose one. Tray1 set as default. Selecting
'nothing'/default, 'Tray1', or 'Tray2' all print from actual tray one
(Tray1). To get paper from tray two (Tray2) you have to select
'Tray3'.
My guess is an 'off by one'-error: Default and 'Tray1' select the
default tray, 'Tray2' actually selects tray one, 'Tray3' selects
tray two etc.
It would be nice to get this fixed. I'm willing to provide further
information, should there be any questions left, and to test a fixed
definition/ppd-file.

I have updated the upstream BZR repository of foomatic-db and the OpenPrinting web site now replacing all the tray names in the manufacturer-independent "InputSlot" options by names without tray numbers. The tray numbering can differ from manufacturer to manufacturer. Ruediger has sent me the PPDs I asked for in private and they were all for the Foomatic/Postscript driver, which means that they are generic PostScript PPDs generated from the Foomatic XML files and not manufacturer-supplied PPDs. The new tray names will appear in the next foomatic-db package. For the time being use either PPD files supplied by Lexmark (highly recommended, in the openprinting-ppds package or on the OpenPrinting web site) or the PPD files of the "Postscript" driver entry on the OpenPrinting web site. Thanks. yes of course, here they are: LM_OPTRAT616.ppd stands for Debian/Lenny with identical files for models OPTRAT614/616/630 LM_OPTRAT614.ppd stands for Debian/Squeeze with identical files for models OPTRAT614/630 LM_T650_RS.ppd stands for Debian/Squeeze and Lexmark model T650 All Lexmark's are of type DTN (meaning duplex printing, second tray and network connection). We are on Debian 5.0 (Lenny, with proposed-updates), but the problem existed previously, too, and might not be version specific. It's just that people get more annoyed, when things are getting better, about the nuissances. The problem is, that the (input) tray selection isn't correctly executed, when printing! Our observation: 'Default' selects tray 1 (which is default, here), as do selecting 'tray 1' and(!) 'tray 2'. When selecting 'tray 3', paper comes in from 'tray 2'. We don't have printers with more trays, so I can't test the hypothesis, but it seems like an 'off by one' error, where a value 'too small' (as for 'default' or 'tray 1') doesn't do any harm - except for not being the 'correct' one; but you would have to confirm that.
