dmsetup info on the device has the open count, but I don't know whether it's better to poll that, or just try to remove/close the device over and over until it succeeds.
Unfortunately, dmsetup wait does not seem to be useful as the event counter is not affected by oepn/close. There is no function in dmsetup to lazy-remove.
