And that's exactly why builds of the graphical installer have been 
disabled. The issue is known and is being worked on.

BTW, the assertion is not the direct cause of the crash. The crash happens 
later.

I have the same problem on a AMD64, using amd64 and i386 both fail with 
the same error. The video card is NVidia 9750, and the weekly build I 
used was the one from 30NOV2009.

I am experiencing the same problem with all the amd64 squeeze daily builds
(businesscard and netinst) from october and up to november 2nd, in a amd64
machine with:

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955
RAM: DDR3 ram
GPU: ATI Radeon HD 4200 onboard GPU
MotherBoard: ASUS M4A785TD-V EVO

In text mode, the installation also fails during the partitioning stage,
that suddenly falls back to the stage menu at different moments (when
choosing the mounting point or the filesystem type in the manual
partitioning setup) without any noticeable reason or error message. If the
partitioning stage is selected again, the loading process gets stacked
editor at 52%.

It does not seem like these two errors are related, but I am not a
developer, so I may be easily wrong.

I've been trying to run graphical installer and got following error during 
loading of first screen:

This message is constantly reappearing and installer retries to start debconf 
again.

I was using daily build from 28-Sep-09
