Bug#561289: kernel-package: initramfs-tools not called after install, though run-parts tries to

2010-01-23 Thread Eduard Bloch
severity 561289 grave
thanks

Okay, today this weird code in /etc/kernel/postinst.d/initramfs-tools
has hit me again. However I sent questions about this few weeks ago and
nobody replied.

Now, this is partially user error -- they are sing the script
that came with initramfs-tools, which does not work, instead of the
working script provided by kernel-package itself.

Which script are you talking about? Which user error?

I (the user) am not aware of any hacks applied by me which would cause
this silent fatal breakdown. This is what happens! Unbootable system or
landing in a weird state where udev does not work for no evident reason,
the only thing indicating the originating problem was udev's postinst.

And what I see is /etc/kernel/postinst.d/initramfs-tools which is
delivered by initramfs-tools, which breaks my systems, which has no
proper documentation inside about why it breaks my systems, and where
the maintainers did not respond to my mail asking about this thing
send WEEKS ago.

Now please explain what is going on and fix it. Until that happens, the
thing is worth having a grave severity, sorry.

Eduard.

Bug#561289: kernel-package: initramfs-tools not called after install, though run-parts tries to

2009-12-15 Thread Edouard Gomez
Package: kernel-package
Version: 12.031
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Trying to install a Linux kernel built with kernel-kpkg won't
result in a bootable kernel after reboot.

This is a typical output from a succeeded install:
$ LC_ALL=C sudo dpkg -i linux-image-2.6.32_2_amd64.deb
(Reading database ... 121446 files and directories currently installed.)
Preparing to replace linux-image-2.6.32 2 (using
linux-image-2.6.32_2_amd64.deb) ...
The directory /lib/modules/2.6.32 still exists. Continuing as directed.
Examining /etc/kernel/preinst.d/
Done.
Unpacking replacement linux-image-2.6.32 ...
Examining /etc/kernel/postrm.d .
run-parts: executing /etc/kernel/postrm.d/initramfs-tools 2.6.32
/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32
Setting up linux-image-2.6.32 (2) ...
Running depmod.
Examining /etc/kernel/postinst.d.
run-parts: executing /etc/kernel/postinst.d/initramfs-tools 2.6.32
/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32
run-parts: executing /etc/kernel/postinst.d/pm-utils 2.6.32 /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32

The tricky part is that /etc/kernel/postinst.d/initramfs-tools
decides to do nothing when getting 2 args.

Moreover, no bootloader update script is executed.

Looking at kernel-img.conf(5) and kernel-pkg.conf(5) does describe
good old posthooks to call update-grub, but they're marked as
obsolete.

Am I missing some stuff that changed in the last packages ?

PS: i use kernel-kpkg since a long long long time, 2.6.18
maybe so I cleaned up kernel-img.conf so that it doesn't
use old variables anymore, nor obsolete vars. But this makes
it nearly impossible to get a booting kernel.

Bug#561289: kernel-package: initramfs-tools not called after install, though run-parts tries to

2009-12-15 Thread Manoj Srivastava
reassign 561289 initramfs-tools
severity 561289 minor
thanks

Hi,

Now, this is partially user error -- they are sing the script
that came with initramfs-tools, which does not work, instead of the
working script provided by kernel-package itself.

This is described in the README, and the man page of make-kpkg
(which mentiontions what needs to be done when using initrds).

I am reassigning as a minor bug since initramfs-tools CVS
apparently has code to support make-kpkg built kernel packages, but it
does not seem to be deploed. Feel free to downgrade/close.
