You're right, and I'd love to do it.  I'm waiting for hdf5 to use the
mpi-defaults system as described in bug 510057 before going ahead with
this.

The bug is a year old, and my offer of a patch is a day old, so we'll
see if they accept and what they do.

PETSc can be built with support for HDF5 using the --with-hdf5=1 flag to
