this issue was fixed upstream in the 0.44 release:

  Release 0.44 - 9 May, 2010
  --
  * RPath information on link - Thanks to Jens Rehsack
  * removed dependency on 'UNIVERSAL' as it is now built-in
(change for perl 5.12 deprecation)

From perl5120delta.pod, which lists significant changes with Perl 5.12.0:

 The method C UNIVERSAL-import()  is now deprecated. Attempting to
 pass import arguments to a Cuse UNIVERSAL statement will result in a
 deprecation warning.

From my build log on amd64 with perl 5.12.0-1 from experimental:

 UNIVERSAL-import is deprecated and will be removed in a future perl at 
/build/niko-libtext-bibtex-perl_0.38-1+b1-amd64-OwhS98/libtext-bibtex-perl-0.38/blib/lib/Text/BibTeX/Entry.pm
 line 22
