I also caught this bug, after entering runlevel 2 plymouth disappears and show VT. I use nouveau from 2.6.35-rc2

The plymouth initscript is called way to early in rc2. The following change in the init script did the trick: move "gdm kdm xdm" from "X-Start-Before" to "Should-Start". Now plymouth exits just before my kdm comes up.
