In other words, doing something with `--force` can go wrong. Not a bug.

And recoding to a charset that contains the relevant characters works.

Conclusion: there's no bug here.

Closing as a non-bug, then.

Thanks a lot.

Bug#608013: recode h..us doesn't replace with ASCII equivalents

2010-12-25 Thread jidanni
X-Debbugs-Cc: recode-b...@iro.umontreal.ca
Package: recode
Version: 3.6-17
Severity: wishlist

I note that recode --force h..us causes raquo; to disappear, when it
could easily better make a , or like uni2ascii -B.

Who knows how many more of these get eaten.

Indeed, attempting to change all the fancy quotes on
http://www.pekingduck.org/2010/12/facebook-drops-taiwan-from-country-list/
to plain ASCII and ' just gets them removed.

OK, recode h..utf8|uni2ascii -B works.
(ascii2uni -a Q is broken at the moment, that how I discovered recode.)

P.S., sure hope you get these bugs and one can see them on the web some
where. The docs don't say where the bugs are archived. Perhaps just use
debbugs.gnu.org.

[Well it turns out that nobody is getting them at
recode-b...@iro.umontreal.ca, so I am also putting them into the Debian
bug tracker, so they don't get lost.]
