Bug#613235: : Re: Bug#613235: release-notes: Watchdog during upgrade

2013-04-07 Thread Duncan

I posted the report referenced above at nas-central.org

This is a bad bug in the squeeze->wheezy upgrade procedure in that it
will leave the Linkstation unbootable with no easy repair option if a
pre-upgrade backup of the root file system is not available.

The simplest solution would be to update the squeeze version of
micro-evtd so that it behaves the same way as the wheezy one when
stopped, so upgrading to wheezy from a fully-updated squeeze would not
kill the system!

Wrong. The squeeze package's init script will be called during the
upgrade to stop the daemon.

Disagree. We can still edit the squeeze release notes if necessary...

This does concern the squeeze->wheezy upgrade. Before the daemon is
upgraded, it is stopped using the init script from squeeze, which does
not disable the watchdog. The change I added in wheezy only fixes the
bug for future upgrades (wheezy->jessie and beyond).

It’s also too late to edit the Squeeze release notes, so I assume we
should close this issue.

Thank you for bringing my attention to this bug.

In micro-evtd in wheezy, the init script's "stop" action disables the
watchdog, so the box won't be killed. I had forgotten that the version
in squeeze doesn't have that behaviour.

I guess it's too late to make that change in squeeze. I think adding a
note in the release-notes would be useful, to the effect that users
should run before upgrading:

# stop the daemon from resetting the watchdog timer
/etc/init.d/micro-evtd stop
# disable the watchdog timer
/usr/sbin/microapl -a system_set_watchdog off

I'm afraid my Linkstation is in storage right now, so I can't test the
upgrade myself soon. Still, please let me know if there's anything else
I can help with.

I'll post this in the thread you linked, as well.

$ apt-cache search micro evtd
avr-evtd - AVR watchdog daemon for Linkstation/Kuroboxes

Are you actually referring to avr-evtd, or another package (if so, witch
one)?

$ apt-cache policy avr-evtd
avr-evtd:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 1.7.7-2
  Version table:
 1.7.7-2 0
500 http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ squeeze/main amd64 Packages
500 http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ wheezy/main amd64 Packages
500 http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ sid/main amd64 Packages

I hardly understand how an upgrade from Squeeze to Wheezy would affect a
non upgraded package (thus a priori a not restarded demon). If you are
referring to a third party package, the release note is not the place to
document its upgrade.

David

Going by this
there may still be some problems with the watchdog daemon, but I don't know if
it is the same problem I had (ie. the new daemon not being started right away).
I have not tried upgrading to Wheezy myself yet.

Is this issue still relevant for Wheezy? I suspect it isn’t and advise
the RN wizard to close it (I may do so myself next time I come across
this bug report unless more information is provided).

Bug#613235: release-notes: Watchdog during upgrade

2011-02-13 Thread Anders Montonen
Package: release-notes
Severity: normal

The upgrade instructions should include a section on system watchdog daemons
(eg. micro-evtd). Following the current instructions means the daemon will be
stopped in the middle of the upgrade when its replacement is unpacked, meaning
the watchdog will be tripped a short while after.
