Bug#620590: [pm-utils] hibernate fails silently if ~/.config/monitors.xml is broken

2011-04-02 Thread Lars Kruse
Package: pm-utils
Version: 1.3.0-3
Severity: normal

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---

Hi,

I noticed that my current user fails to use hibernate, while a fresh new user
can hibernate/thaw without problems.
I was able to track down the problem to the existence of the file
~/.config/monitors.xml. The file was created by 'gnome-display-properties'.

Since I just moved my home directory from another PC to a new one (with a fresh
squeeze installation), I assume, that the monitors.xml file soemhow does not
suit my current hardware profile (probably I did not run
'gnome-display-properties' recently).

Anyway: hibernate worked after removing monitors.xml.
Hibernate even works with a new monitors.xml file (created by
gnome-display-properties).

Symptoms of hibernate failure:
- screen went black after 5 seconds
- no further activity - no response
- a hard reboot was necessary (with no valid hibernate image found)

I attached both versions of monitors.xml (working and broken) and the output of
xrandr.

Hopefully, pm-utils is the right place for this bug report ...
The package hibernate is installed - I don't know, if/how it is
involved.

cheers,
Lars

 Hi,

Are you using gnome-power-manager?
What exactly do you mean by fail: does it simply do nothing, does it fails to
resume, do you get any error messages?
How do you trigger hibernate?

I was able to track down the problem to the existence of the file
~/.config/monitors.xml. The file was created by 'gnome-display-properties'.

It most likely not a problem in pm-utils, maybe gnome-power-manager.
Do you get any error messages in .xsession-errors?

Could you try to run gnome-power-manager --verbose from a terminal and attach
the output
