As an update, the problem remains on the latest iso image for testing
amd64 (August 22nd, 2011 DVD-1). This time I tried it on a different
system (a Linux Certified Inc. LC2131 laptop) and it failed with the
same error. Once again the logs are not present (I searched for them
from a shell given to me by the Debian Installer) and system is
unbootable...

This is the only way I can install Debian on this new laptop! because
it has a new SSD drive that partman-md from Squeeze can't handle and
the installation fails too...

I'm trying on of those Debian squeeze + kernel from backports iso
image to see if I can get a working system and then upgrade from
there

I've found the bug 635400, which was not merged with this older one.
It seems it was fixed on Debconf11. For me it is enough to uncomment
"deb cdrom..." in /target/etc/apt/sources.list (without make a symlink
scd0) in order the installation can continue, but I can't get more
than standard software in tasksel.

Oh, I couldn't even think vbox may affect the installation process
such a way. And I hit install, and then just enter-enter-... Only the
network remains not configured.

So the weekly-builds from 08 and from now (15 august, just tested)
can't be installed. It goes wrong still from the same point. Instead
of choice of desktop/file-,mail-,..server/laptop, one see only
standard software and then unable to install grub-pc to target (syslog
attached).

Is there any log of the fixing this issue from Debconf11?

I am sorry to read this but it seems it has been working for most
people and you/Virtual Box has something that makes it to not work as
expected.

Bug#629695:

2011-08-10 Thread Andrey Gursky
Hi!

Sorry I've discovered this bug report only recently. I'm dealing with
this failure since about 4-5 months. And I'm wondering what is the
purpose of weekly generated DVD-images when the distribution can't be
installed from them during the last 4-5 months?

How to reproduce this? It would be enough straightforward to install
that what has been generated on DVD-1 weekly image. I'm doing it every
week under VirtualBox. The saved logs (from integrated WEB server) are
attached.

Hope it could help to find out what's going wrong here. Or please
point me to the discussion on the structure of DVD-1 image
(debian-installer - tasksel - pkgsel ...).

Best regards,
Andrey

Bug#629695: debian-installer: fails to install bootloader due to package dependences inconsistency

2011-06-29 Thread Grzegorz Bizon
Hi again,

This bug (#632025) is probably connected to #629695.
Maybe we should merge them ?

 Grzegorz Bizon

I used a live cd to boot up my laptop (after an aborted failed
installation) and I mounted my hard drive, but I couldn't find such
files under /var/log/ ... there was a faillog and lastlog but both
were empty..

We need the installation logs. You'll find them in /var/log/syslog
while installing, or in /var/log/installer on the installed system.
