Bug#639221: replace folding.el with elpa-folding
Control: tag -1 -moreinfo I received confirmation from #debian-ftp that this "all rights reserved" is a statement of copyright ownership rather than a statement of license, so the effort to package folding.el with dh-elpa is now unimpeded. Cheers, Nicholas signature.asc Description: PGP signature
Bug#639221: replace folding.el with elpa-folding
It looks like there is a precedent on debian-legal for rejecting uploads due to "All rights reserved" when GPL is simultaneously declared. Issue forwarded here: https://github.com/jaalto/project-emacs--folding-mode/issues/4 signature.asc Description: PGP signature

None of those "Use X, X is the future!" shenanigans, when a living upstream for an existing goodies subpackage is available ;-) I plan to have the packaging done within 24h, and will add you as an additional Uploader. That means having the keybindings they are used to work in the same way (to the degree that is possible even with the same package).

Yeah, this is a long-running debate...should Debian provide only the basics and let users install everything else from the internet, or should Debian provide a curated and supported subset of various package archives. I'm in the latter camp, but personally I think that it would be wonderful if it was easier to grab up-to-date browser plugins and ELPA packages on Debian stable Re: the value in a Debian-packaged curated subset of MELPA and GNU Elpa: Trust (not random unsigned code off of github), and compatibility--we have a team dedicated to making sure they work properly with each other, and to work with all of the upstreams to make this a reality. Worst-case scenario explicit breaks would be declared. Sean, did you ever write a blog post or short paper about the vision and scope of dh-elpa? It would be nice if this was more visible to users. I've been asked about it at least a dozen times this last year ;-) Cheers, Nicholas signature.asc Description: PGP signature

I'm not convinced this one is more suitable for the Debian archive than the alternatives, but if you consent to being an Uploader for Jaalto's folding-mode (continuation of the goodies one) then I'm willing to package it: https://github.com/jaalto/project-emacs--folding-mode/ Going from MELPA stats (thank you again for the link): https://melpa.org/download_counts.json "folding": 3179, "origami": 21948, "vimish-fold": 11063, "yafolding": 5459, Origami is almost 2x more popular than the closest runner-up... Yes, Jaalto's folding-mode's stats are undefined, so it might be equally or more popular. Would you still prefer if I get to work on Jaalto's folding-mode, and comaintain it (under team maintenance, of course)? Cheers, Nicholas signature.asc Description: PGP signature

Jaalto's project of course wins for backwards-compatibility ;-) Let's not bring new complications into an already complicated project. If the same package looks viable upstream let's package that; it it doesn't, let's not delay things for finding/packaging alternatives. Chances are the users are in a much better position to nominate a replacement package. d

Jaalto's project of course wins for backwards-compatibility ;-) For my purposes, an alternative is fine. In general I'm not sure there's much value in packaging Emacs lisp in Debian, given the availability and ease of use of package.el and the various package archives.

Given that whatever we do will require a new source package in the archive, maybe it would be a good time to consider alternative folding addons? Jaalto's project of course wins for backwards-compatibility ;-) Summary of options: http://wikemacs.org/wiki/Folding Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/emacs/comments/746cd0/which_code_folding_package_do_you_use/ Hideshow minor mode (built-in, M-x hs-minor-mode) https://github.com/gregsexton/origami.el (allegedly slow for large files) https://github.com/mrkkrp/vimish-fold (not featureful?)
