Alas. Thanks for checking.

Under the usual conditions, I couldn't see any problem with
tmpfs for /tmp. I've now reverted to:

  Linux version 3.2.0-1-amd64 (Debian 3.2.7-1) (debian-ker...@lists.debian.org)
(gcc version 4.6.2 (Debian 4.6.2-16) ) #1 SMP Tue Feb 28 15:35:32 UTC 2012

(still with tmpfs for /tmp) and I'll see whether the temporary freeze
problems reappear.

Very helpful, thanks.

Right, I wouldn't expect that to make the difference unless the main
source of load on this machine is from acting as an svn server.

I've reverted to tmpfs for /tmp. I haven't seen any problem yet,
but my laptop isn't currently under "normal" conditions. I may
have more information in a few days, or more likely at the end
of the month. If the problem doesn't reappear, I'll revert to
the Linux kernel 3.2.15.

Something else that has changed on 2012-06-19: I've upgraded
to Subversion 1.7.x, which means fewer disk accesses. But the
problem seemed to be unrelated to the use of Subversion.

Could you be convinced to reenable tmpfs for /tmp again, so we can
see if that's the cause of the change? (Unfortunately I suspect it
is.)

If "no", that's fine, of course. :)

Thanks,
Jonathan

AFAIK, I haven't seen such a freeze for several weeks. If some bug
has been fixed in the kernel, it must be between 3.2.15 and 3.2.20.
The other possible change in the system I can see is that tmpfs is
no longer used for /tmp (after 2012-06-11).

found 647741 3.2.15-1
thanks

Bug#647741 still occurs in the linux-image-3.2.0-2-amd64 kernel
version 3.2.15-1: I was typing in an xterm, and the characters
appeared only after a few seconds. A few minutes earlier, the
windows (Emacs and Iceweasel) weren't redisplayed for several
seconds after switching the desktop.

During the freeze, the disk activity becomes high, and so does
the load average (due to disk activity, I suppose).
