I cannot reproduce this, and the package definitively ships a
/usr/lib/calibre/calibre/ebooks/chardet.py with that symbol.

 * Which python version do you use? 
 
   python --version

 * Could this be disk corruption?

   (cd /; md5sum -c --quiet < /var/lib/dpkg/info/calibre.md5sums)
