 i forced an update of the packages (with no ill effect so far) and the
 issue went away so i am guessing that package update did indeed fix the
 issue

 thanks very much for following up with me

Ok. I have no idea what happened, I'll ask the maintainer of
gnome-packagekit if he has any idea, then ask for a binNMU.

Matthias, it seems the same issue has gnome-packagekit happened to two
users of xfce4-power-manager. It seems that rebuilding against a newer
Glib would fix the issue, but do you have any pointer on what is the
real underlying issue, before I ask for a binNMU?

 Here's what I get:

 $ xfce4-power-manager --debug
 ** ERROR **: g_thread_init() must be called before dbus_threads_init()

I wonder if it can be the same thing as http://bugs.debian.org/668848

Could you try to rebuild the package and see if that changes anything?
What architecture are you using?
