Bug#690036: unblock: rabbitmq-server/2.8.7-1

2012-12-14 Thread Alexander Pabst

Hi there,
it would be rather important to unblock a more recent release, as
Rabbitmq 2.8.4 seems to have a rather annoying bug that makes it
impossible to run chef-server on Wheezy.

http://tickets.opscode.com/browse/CHEF-3256
http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.comp.networking.rabbitmq.general/17120

This bug seems to be fixed in Rabbitmq 2.8.5 and a bump to 3.0 would
probably provide a lot more fixes.

What has to be done for this unblock to be possible?

Thanks

Alex

There don't seem to be any bugs relating to that filed against the
Debian packages as far as I can see? (I'd expect there to be if it is
actually impossible.)

The size of the diff makes an unblock infeasible, as has already been
indicated.

If there are particular issues that need fixing in wheezy then someone
would need to look at preparing a testing-proposed-updates upload for
those, and open a new bug to discuss that.

Adam

I've just compared tags rabbitmq_v2_8_4 and rabbitmq_v2_8_7 with
mercurial using all released repositories hosted at hg.rabbitmq.com but
was unable to get similar numbers:

97 files changed, 1388 insertions, 1798 deletions

Comparing the orig.tar.gz files for 2.8.4 and 2.8.7 produce different
results, but also not as high:

116 files changed, 4196 insertions(+), 1115 deletions(-)

I've just re-compared the source packages as uploaded to the Debian
archive, and (predictably) get exactly the same result. Attached is the
result of

debdiff ftp/pool/main/r/rabbitmq-server/rabbitmq-server_2.8.{4,7}-1.dsc
| diffstat.

Thanks for explaining. The different statistics are mostly due to
webmachine and mochiweb. These are dependencies of a subset of rabbitmq
plugins that had to be upgraded in order to solve a bug. Webmachine
also moved from bitbucket to github during the period in question.

That's an awful lot of bug fixes for a few revisions on a stable branch.
It's also not particularly reviewable.

Why was the changelog entry for 2.8.4-1 removed?

 The 2.8.x releases were made from a stable branch. The most important
 fixes are to High Availability mode of operation. All of the changes
 in question were made upstream. It would be very unfortunate if 2.8.4
 was accepted instead, because it is halfway down a stable branch of
 development.

Halfway down a stable branch of development sounds a little odd. Isn't
the point of a stable branch that it only receives bug fixes, rather
than new development?

Adam

That represents bugfixes over the last 3 releases for this package. The
most important bugfixes that we are especially keen for users to get
relate to High Availability (HA) mode of operation.

It's also not particularly reviewable.

The changes can be reviewed by checking out with mercurial:
$ hg clone http://hg.rabbitmq.com/rabbitmq-public-umbrella
$ make -C rabbitmq-public-umbrella checkout

And then performing a comparison for each repository, e.g.
$ cd rabbitmq-public-umbrella/rabbitmq-server
$ hg diff -r rabbitmq_v2_8_4 -r rabbitmq_v2_8_7

Why was the changelog entry for 2.8.4-1 removed?

That was a mistake. It should say * New upstream release.

Halfway down a stable branch of development sounds a little odd. Isn't

The rabbitmq_v2_8_x branch only received backported bugfixes over the
last 7 releases.

Please let me know if there is any more information I can provide to
help your review.
