Bug#698060: all better
Brian, OdyX-- Thanks for your help, the printer got better. Sadly, I don't know exactly what changed, so I can't document what fixed the problem. One thing that may have poked things into success is I pm-suspend my machine every night. That may have disturbed some software package in the right direction. I'll contend that there is still a problem here, the printer should have self installed. In the span of 3 days I installed wheezy (printer didn't work), installed squeeze (printer worked), installed wheezy (printer didn't work). I do know the "waiting for printer to become available" was resolved when I power cycled the printer. I'd unplugged/replugged the USB cable and didn't see anything show up in dmesg. I also plugged into a different USB port and didn't see that in dmesg either. I'm guessing the printer got into some oddball state. I suspect this "waiting" problem is separate from the self installation problem. Regardless, I appreciate the help and direction. If you find yourself in Fort Collins, Colorado, the first beer is on me. --mark -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Bug#698060: not sure
Brian, OdyY-- I should start with saying I'm a hardware guy working in the areas of DSP and VLSI. Software higher than system calls and library functions just confuses me, massively parallel hardware is fun. I miss the days of `cat file > /dev/lp`. It looks like bug https://www.cups.org/str.php?L4177 is awfully similar to what I'm seeing. > First select "Add Printer" and either authenticate or go back and try > "Find New Printers" I tried this again and the stupid printer showed up. How about that. I have no idea what got poked but something changed. The printer did show up as paused, and once I resumed it, I got a new and interesting status: "Waiting for printer to become available." When I google that string, I'm finding lots of people with variations of printers that seen by the kernel but not cups. I'll keep poking around seeing what I can do here. It's still not printing but progress is happening. --mark -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? I wasn't suggesting you use system-config-printer-udev, but if you did have it on the system it would automatically set up a print queue. Which would mean CUPS would have no new printers to find. Anyway, I get the same as you do, so it is not your printer at fault. When CUPS says "No printers found" I reckon it does not mean "printers have been looked for but haven't been found". It is more like "You haven't authenticated, so I'm not bothering even to look". First select "Add Printer" and either authenticate or go back and try "Find New Printers". Brian-- The command: $ dpkg -l | grep "system-config-printer-udev" does in fact return nothing. A quick look in aptitude shows that the package does exist but is not installed. Not that I know what I'm doing, but I installed it anyway and tried the localhost:631 thing but didn't see any difference. Bug#698060: HL-2040 more info
Hi mark, I just tested, I can successfully detect and setup my HP printer over USB here: it's therefor not a universal problem and will likely stay "important". Can you now run # /usr/lib/cups/backend/usb as root and paste the result in the bugreport? Bug#698060: cups fails to recognize brother HL-2040 usb printer
Package: cups Version: 1.5.3-2.12 Severity: normal Dear Maintainer, I did a complete wipe and install with Wheezy and cups doesn't recognize nor auto-install my Brother HL-2040. I did a complete wipe and install with Squeeze and it worked great (although it configured as a HL-2060). I hope that wasn't confusing, the printer auto configures under Squeeze but not Wheezy. Wheezy/cups never sees the printer. Under Wheezy, when I go to http://localhost:631/admin and click on "Find New Printer" it responds with "No printers found".
