Bug#699360: gnome-disk-utility: UDF partitions support, should replace NTFS

2013-01-30 Thread Paul Wise
Package: gnome-disk-utility
Version: 3.6.1-1
Severity: wishlist

I wanted to try out UDF on a USB stick because of this article:

http://tanguy.ortolo.eu/blog/article93/usb-udf

Unfortunately gnome-disks doesn't appear to support UDF at this time,
even if I put udf or UDF into the custom format field. I had
udftools installed at the time I tried this.

Based on that article, I think UDF should replace FAT as the default
format for the Compatible with most systems situation.

While we can certainly add support for UDF, changing the default is
something entirely else. I don't even think we have a default in
g-d-u. Or what exactly do you mean by that?

The version of g-d-u I reported this against uses udisks2, not udisks.

g-d-u in experimental has a rewritten UI and includes defaults for
several different scenarios. In any case, I overlooked one detail in
that blog post, UDF is read-only in Windows XP. I imagine there is a lot
of Window XP out there still so the default should not be changed.

Looks like we just need to update to a newer release [1] to get udf support.

Excellent!

Hmm, I note the code does not use the --media-type= parameter.
