Bug#720331: libnet-ldap-perl depends on libwww-perl. Why?

2013-12-22 Thread Xavier
Hi all,

feature 'LWP support for the LDAP protocol family' requires
LWP::Protocol which is provided by libwww-perl. So I think that
libwww-perl must be kept either on Depends: or Recommends:

Regards,
Xavier

From that description I'd even say it's only Suggests, but also
Enhances.

Bug#720331: libnet-ldap-perl depends on libwww-perl. Why?

2013-08-20 Thread John Hughes
Package: libnet-ldap-perl
Version: 1:0.4400-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

   * What led up to the situation?

I installed libnet-ldap-perl in order to query a ldap database

   * What was the outcome of this action?

libwww-perl was installed, leading to a whole mess of dependancies

   * What outcome did you expect instead?

Just a few little things.

Does libnet-ldap-perl realy need libwww-perl and all it's 20-odd dependancies?

Bug#720331: libnet-ldap-perl depends on libwww-perl. Why?

When we (Debian Perl team) took over maintenance of libnet-ldap-perl in
2008, it already had the dependency on libwww-perl. However, the package
never had a build-dependency on libwww-perl until very recently, and as
far as I can see, modules from libwww-perl are referenced only in
conjunction with optional features (specifically, for use of the
LWP::Protocol::ldap, LWP::Protocol::ldaps, or LWP::Protocol::ldapi
modules).

So I think the dependency on libwww-perl is indeed bogus, and can be
lowered to Suggests.
