I've checked my dpkg logs and this issue did not come up with either
alacarte_3.10.0-1 or alacarte_3.11.91-1
Both installed fine from the repository and I can see they both have dependency
on python:any instead of python;
maybe that was the problem.
I should have followed this up by posting to the bug so it could be closed,
very sorry.

Could you please still reproduce this issue with newer alacarte version like
3.11.91-1 ?
it still depends on python (= 2.6.6-3~) but I can't see your issue here.
