Yes, this prompting is at least 150% politically correct, so I'm opting
to patch the upstream files tzdata/europe and tzdata/zone.tab:

why can't we do anything about it? We do have the source, don't we? ;-)

Also its 99,999% or something, not 99,9%. (Too lazy to do the exact math,
but Büsingen has 1335 inhabitants compared to 80 mio.)

Also:

[13:01] < h01ger> | wh000t! timezone busingen! for those who dont know
what the differenze between standard german (or swiss) time is: in 1980 .de
introduced summertime and in 1981 .ch (and busingen) did it, thats why.
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Büsingen_am_Hochrhein explains that, the english
page doesnt...

[13:07] < h01ger> | that page also says that businged follow_ed_ swiss
time laws, as if it doesnt do this anymore, so it sounds unlikely that it will
divert from germany ever again. and even if, being prompted between
berlin+busingen at anything but an pedantic installation (pedantic>expert)
seems silly to me.

Or maybe this is a case of me being sleepy or neverending April 1st?!?

cheers,
Holger, who really wants timezone "Hamburg St.Pauli" or altona.dk anyway

Thanks for the patch.

I just committed the fix. I have to admit that I'm not entirely happy
with D-I prompting German users for a timezone which 99.9% of the
country doesn't care about but it seems we can't do anything else
until the Busingen area reverts their specific way to handle time.

Let's just imagine what may think a random Manfred user whho knows
nothing about timezones and the Büsingen exception may think when
being prompted to choose between "Berlin" and "Büsingen" : "Warum
nicht Hamburg, Frankfurt, Dummersdorf or Schiefenthal?":-). But,
anyway, better at least have this translated.

So, let's add two more translatable string to D-I sublevel 3 and,
then, tomorrow, the German translator of D-I will be able to translate
"Berlin" to "Berlin" and "Busingen" to "Büsingen".

(tomorrow only, because the D-I l10n-sync runs once a day to
synchronize the master translation file)

Tchüss !

The reported error is due to a missing entry in
tzsetup/debian/common.templates.in, I guess.

In which language have you done the installation? "Busingen" is
correctly translated to "Büsingen" including in English and German,
except in Danish, Basque, French, Italian, Portuguese and Brasilian.

Bug#726434: debian-installer: Time zone "Busingen" is missing "ü" umlaut

Well, maybe you're right. Büsingen is a tiny German exclave (1500
inhabitants) which seems to follows Zurich time:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B%C3%BCsingen

At the moment (and for the forseeable future) Zurich time is the same
as Berlin time, so it seems questionable whether it is worthwhile to
bother German users with that corner case.

So, yes, as far as I know, these things probably belong to tzdata, but
it's surprising as this is the first time a german user reports being
prompted for a timezone during a D-I install (and we probably have
more than one german user...or Debian is really sicker than what I was
thinking...).

Büsingen seems to have been added recently. It only shows up in
jessie. (I've just tested that the 7.2 installer doesn't prompt German
users.)

Cheers,
Thiemo

In such case, we should modify tzsetup to care about the Büsingen case.
Even if this is unlikely, nothing can guarantee that, in the future,
Switzerland (or the Zurich canton) decides to modify DST dates and then
Büsingen to follow that. We need to think about those 1500 inhabitants
and their gazillion of Debian servers (after all, not being far from
Zurich, there might be some Googlers living in Büsingen...)...;-)

I really did mean tz*data*. See:
| $ apt-cache showsrc tzsetup|grep tzdata
| Build-Depends: debhelper (>= 9), tzdata, iso-codes, isoquery

In tzsetup:
| $ grep -A 1 /usr/share Makefile
| debian/tzmap: gen-templates debian/common.templates.in
/usr/share/zoneinfo/zone.tab debian/iso_3166.tab

So I think you want to get tzdata updated, and tzsetup should contain
the update once it's rebuilt against an updated tzdata package.
