Bug#737938: BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at 000008000000001c

2014-02-17 Thread Stephen Powell
After replacing the bad memory and reinstalling Debian from scratch, I have had
no further
problems. I am assuming that the symptoms of this bug report were caused by
the bad
memory. You may close this bug report at your convenience.

I've made a new friend: memtest86+, which I will use on all systems with
non-ECC memory
from now on. Thanks for the tip!

Looks like a bit flip to me (0 turned to 0x800 and then treated
as a real pointer). Did you run memtest86+ or other memory test yet?

I'm not used to systems that don't automatically check their memory,
as all my old i386 systems do. And I hate non-ECC memory, which this
system uses. But your hunch was right. memtest86+ revealed a bad
memory DIMM, which makes my entire installation suspect. New memory
is on order. I'll reinstall Debian from scratch once the new memory
has been installed and tested.
