You are right. I just tried to run steam 1.0.0.48-1 on son's computer
under test user and it works OK. The bug is fixed upstream already.
This bug can be closed.

It looks like you have file somewhere on your system that the steam
binary wants to overwrite but bails out instead.  It's not clear which
file is the problem.

I recommend forwarding this to Valve, since no changes can be made to

Dear Maintainer,
Steam doesn't work on a box of my son. It is a mix of Jessie  Sid.
I tried to run Steam under my account from scratch.
I removed all previos directories like
~/.steam ~/Steam ~/.steampid ~/.steampath
then run
steam
After some downloading and extracting it simply ends.
