I can confirm this bug (after one year).The "Switch Off/On Wi-Fi" in the wicd-gtk package always shows the opposit of the real state. So to enable a WLAN connection you first have to Switch ***Off*** Wi-Fi, otherwise it won't work. No autoconnect!
