Hi,

fwiw, this behaviour was introduced with 0.1.23. Versions 0.1.23 work
fine (i.e., it's not a python update that introduced this).

It does indeed help. Thanks for providing a succinct reproduce script and some 
bounds for investigation. A git bisect points at this commit as being the 
problem:
