Dear Maintainer,

This has been happening even in the 2.1.X stable versions of VLC.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?

Going into Audio - Stereo Mode - Left/Right

   * What was the outcome of this action?

Choosing any of those two doesn't do anything, VLC still plays both
channels regardless.

   * What outcome did you expect instead?

To have either the left or the right channel to be duplicated, and the
other to be discarded.
