Bug#790561: After upgrading udev from 215-18 to 220-7 or 221-1, the system is unbootable afterwards

Hi,

uff, I found some time to finally going on with that issue. Sorry for
the delay.

I did the test now with version 227-2 and after severa reboots I can
rule out that the bug lies in the rules. Even after replacing all rules
I get the large boot delay. (~100 seconds)

But I might have found another problem that definitively lies in the
rules. But this is another issue I guess so focusing on this first.

Just for the records: When I use (all) original rules from 227-2, I
cannot shutdown (reboot) the system a clean way. The system stuck with
"Stopping remaining crypto devices" (something like that, I do not have
the original message). With all rules replaced with the rules from
215-18, that shutdown works well.

As I started first with going backwards one by one with the scripts,
after two reboots I decided to take the other way, keeping udev 227-2
installed but replacing all rules with the version from 215-18 and then
wanted to go forward step by step as other way around it would take ages
to go ahead. But after seeing that the bug also occcure with all rules
replaced, I stopped, so no idea where this new bug is located.

2015-09-05 Thread Klaus Ethgen

Hi,

I found a bit time today to try to get into this problem again.

After upgrading to the most recent udev, I tried to redirect stdout and
stderr in init script to /run and booting the machine with debug output.

Unfortunatelly, the files was empty after boot. As I first did it wrong
and had the old init script from udev 215-18 (what does not work with
new udev) I seen that the redirect works but not with version 225-1.

However, I seen that the problem still exists and I seen some strange
messages about event3 or js0 timing out (I have no joystick connected to
my system and never had).

As it might be a case of the input system, could it be that new udev
cannot handle lenovo thinkvantage keyboard with build in trackpoint over
the same USB connection?

The next days, when I have time again, I'll try to replace rules one by
one. But therefor I need much time considering the long boot process.

Regards

After SCSI detection it takes ~100 seconds to finish USB HID detection.
That is ten times more than with udev 215-18. So the system is not
unbootable anymore but painful slow booting.

If the system if fully booted (with v222), is the problem reproducible
if you run

Does the settle call block as well for such a long time?
Have you seen my earlier reply regarding a verbose udev debug log?
Would be great if you can gather this information.

As I wrote before, I can do this after the weekend. Unfortunately I need
the system up and running and to be honest, I am not sure, if I find
time next week to do it. (I will be not @home for the two weeks
afterwards. So in worst case, it will take 3 weeks until I can do the
tests fully.)

It's also not completely clear to me whether the hang already

As the system has no initramfs, it is the real system.

Well, I seen sometink hoe to enable debugging in grub commandline.
Unfortunately there is no way to write that log stuff to a file. The
only way I could think of would be to take a video from the booting
process. However, I do not have a video camera so have to ask friends

Have you seen my reply, regarding setting SYTEMD_LOG_TARGET=console in

That should work

Thanks. So we now need to bisect the change. My gut feeling is that
it's due to changes in /lib/udev/rules.d/, not in udevd itself.

I attached all udev rules provided by the udev 215 package (note that
lots of other packages ship stuff in /lib/udev/rules.d/) for
convenience. As a starter, could you install udev 222, and do

  cp -a /lib/udev/rules.d{,.orig}
  dpkg -L udev|grep lib/udev/rules.d/.*rules|xargs rm
  tar -C /lib/udev/rules.d/ -xf /tmp/rules-215.tar.gz

I'm a bit confused though: how can you get a dmesg output from a bad

I already wrote that, from time to time the boot get through after

Booting with udev.log-priority=debug udev.children-max=1 on the kernel

I did that. And it seems that the bug does not happen with that
 settings.

It just take over 10 minutes for all that messages to scroll over the
screen. Unfortunately, the messages gets not written anywhere so there
is no way to attach them to a mail.

With systemd, those early boot messages would end up in the journal.

I don't use sysvinit anymore, so I don't know if there is a way to get
early boot message but you could probably hack the /etc/init.d/udev sysv
init script and add
export SYSTEMD_LOG_TARGET=console before the systemd-udevd daemon is
started and redirect stderr of the daemon to a file in /run (which
should be a tmpfs and writable early during boot).

Maybe I can film the boot screen
with all that messages and send you the movie about it. That is the only
idea that I have to provide you with that informations.

I don't think that would be particularly helpful.

However, I'll attach you the dmesg from that boot try and a clean dmesg
from a good udev. In the last one I mark the position where new udev
breaks. (Note that the order of the messages is completely different
 between the two dmesg outputs.)

Please note also that I get different counts of the following messages with
 every boot:
usb 2-3.2: device descriptor read/64, error -110
usb 8-3.2: device descriptor read/64, error -110
usb 8-3.2: device descriptor read/64, error -110
usb 8-3.2: device descriptor read/64, error -110

I don't see anything relevant in those logs.
I'm a bit confused though: how can you get a dmesg output from a bad
boot, when the system did not boot?

Package: udev
Version: 220-7
Severity: critical

After upgrading my system from 215-18 to 220-7 or 221-1, (only udev
changes), my system is not bootable anymore.

Here is all the informations I have:
I first upgraded to 221-1 and then did the reboot. After that, the
system freezes after the SCSI initialisation.

After several tries the system finally booted (after ~5 minutes) with
many errors and showing many timeout of nonexisting devices with an
sequence counter aroung 3000(!) that shows that udev tries to loop over
all available and unavailable USB devices and freezes there with one or
another nonexisting device combination. It craped out, for example,
trying to find a joystick device on a keyboard (the system has no
joystick at all).

Downgrading to 220-7 makes the problem even worse. Then it seems to loop
over all USB devices twice what has twice the change to freeze.

Downgrading to 215-18 solves the problem (After an one hour restart
nightmare).

Is this reproducible with a Debian provided kernel?

Well, as a debian provided kernel is not booting on that system, that is
not possible to get tested.

As you might see, this is a system without initrd and with a separate
/usr. Both thinks that are not supported by systemd. That setup worked
well for ages now.

Also the fact that this bug is especially introduced by only udev change
and that all udev before shows that it is introduced in the changed
versions of udev.

Have you made sure that your kernel has all options enabled as specified

There is no /usr/share/doc/systemd/README.gz on my system. However, I'll
send you the kernel config so you can check yourself.

udev.preinst looks like it tries to do so (check_kernel_features), but
 it depends on several factors:

  - /proc/kallsyms needs to be present for the symbols check. This might
not be enabled on custom kernels.

It is enabled in my case. I have a populated /proc/kallsyms.

  - udev must be active

It is. (Is it even possible to run debian without active udev?)

There is even a check for CONFIG_FHANDLE:

 - open_by_handle_at(2) (CONFIG_FHANDLE)

But I wouldn't trust it too much; after all this check is probably not
the most tested part of the package...

That might be as it seems to not working.

unbootable.

Hi,

If you compile your own kernel, you should make sure all requirements
listed at [1] are met. I didn't check all other options, but your
problem is most likely related to that.

In the past the udev package IIRC checked for such issues in preinst
and refused to upgrade if it found newly required configurations not
being present.

Any reason why this hasn't been done in this case?

udev.preinst looks like it tries to do so (check_kernel_features), but
it depends on several factors:

 - /proc/kallsyms needs to be present for the symbols check. This might
not be enabled on custom kernels.
 - udev must be active

There is even a check for CONFIG_FHANDLE:

- open_by_handle_at(2) (CONFIG_FHANDLE)

But I wouldn't trust it too much; after all this check is probably not
the most tested part of the package...

There is a note about CONFIG_UEVENT_HELPER_PATH and I already answered

I did that. And it seems that the bug does not happen with that
settings.

It just take over 10 minutes for all that messages to scroll over the
screen. Unfortunately, the messages gets not written anywhere so there
is no way to attach them to a mail. Maybe I can film the boot screen
with all that messages and send you the movie about it. That is the only
idea that I have to provide you with that informations.

However, I'll attach you the dmesg from that boot try and a clean dmesg
from a good udev. In the last one I mark the position where new udev
breaks. (Note that the order of the messages is completely different
between the two dmesg outputs.)

Please note also that I get different counts of the following messages with
every boot:
   usb 2-3.2: device descriptor read/64, error -110
   usb 8-3.2: device descriptor read/64, error -110
   usb 8-3.2: device descriptor read/64, error -110
