Oh, that command is really handy!
Guess the next transition will be easier for me now ;)

Thanks Klaus!

This finally solved my problem. Using 'apt-show-versions | grep 'No
available version in archiv'' I found out that somehow I had manually
compiled the package libsigc++-2.0-0c2a. I guess this package was stopping
me from installing libsigc++-2.0-0v5, which is a necessary dependency of
inkscape.

Thank you all for your help. Debian has a great community!

Maybe, but here inksacpe installed well on a testing system. You
should check for foreign, maybe self-compiled packages:

apt-show-versions | grep unknown

and:

apt-show-versions | grep 'No available version in archiv'

Then, maybe you get an idea which packages cause the problem, if you
check which of your installed packages are not from testing:

apt-show-versions | grep -v testing

Bug#798341: [inkscape] impossible to install inkscape

2015-10-15 Thread Diego Alejandro Agudelo España
Hey Mattia,

Thanks a lot for such a detailed answer. It seems that I'm in situation 3b
(it asks me to remove half of the system :( ) as well. I've no idea about
the package that can be generating the issue.

The most problematic package seems to be libsigc++-2.0-0v5 and according to
[1] a complex transition is taking place right now. This can be a potential
cause as well but in this scenario I have no idea about how to proceed.

On the other hand I think that now that I'm better prepared to fix issues
with apt with your recommendations and hints. I really appreciate your help.

Regards,

Diego

Ok, so according to you you don't have any other repository enabled.
I can believe you: I hade several problems too, and I had to manually do
something, even if I don't use any other external repository, that's
because I had a locally built package that was blocking things.
Another common case is a library that got manually installed for
whatever reason: if that the case apt won't easily propose you a
solution including removing them, while in this case might be needed.

The workthrough I'm suggesting you to persue is:
 1) try to tell apt to install all those package it does not want to
install, other than installing the singular
 2) if it still complain take one library per time still giving problems
and force apt to install it
 3) you'll arrive at some point where it propose you to remove some
pacakages; this can mean either half of your system or a handful of
packages
3a) if they are only a handful of leaf packages just remove them,
you'll try reinstalling them later, once you resolved this other
  problem
3b) if it's half of the system then reand that list throughly, and
look for "suspicious" packages, that means packages installed
locally, manually built, coming from other repository you removed,
and big leaf packages that might cause issues (I mean, "big"
end-user applications, like sigil. Most probably the faulty
package is also outdated. Ask apt to explicitely update it, or
  remove it.
 4) goto 1

If everything is good I suggest you to mark as automatically installed
every package other than inkscape itself, so that apt can be more ease
with them and treat them as a real library, something that can come and
go:

$ sudo apt-mark auto $pkg1 $pkg2 $pkg3 $pkgN

In my case I was in the 3b situation, reviewing that list made me notice
a locally build scribus package, and some other stuff I just removed and
fixed to get them back later on.
It may look hard to do but trust me is not :)
It just requires some time if you're not used to keep apt in your hands,
but nothing to be scared about :)

> Do you guys have any suggestion to fix this?
>
> I'm open to provide more details about my particular system configuration.

Please try this and see where you end. Hopefully you'll find what is
blocking you.
I'd like to at least see whether I can help somebody keeping his system
working...

Bug#798341: [inkscape] impossible to install inkscape

2015-10-14 Thread Diego Alejandro Agudelo España
Hey guys,

First of all I want to apologize beforehand if I'm breaking any rule or
protocol for reporting bugs in Debian, it's the first time I'm
writing/reporting a problem here.

I noticed that you marked this ticket as closed but after reading this
thread I'm still unable to install Inkscape in Debian testing. The error
message I got is similiar to the message reported by Marco Righi, which is:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
inkscape : Depends: libatkmm-1.6-1v5 (>= 2.22.1) but it is not going to be
installed
Depends: libcairomm-1.0-1v5 (>= 1.6.4) but it is not going to
be installed
Depends: libglibmm-2.4-1v5 (>= 2.44.0) but it is not going to
be installed
Depends: libgtkmm-2.4-1v5 (>= 1:2.24.0) but it is not going to
be installed
Depends: libpangomm-1.4-1v5 (>= 2.36.0) but it is not going to
be installed
Depends: libsigc++-2.0-0v5 (>= 2.2.0) but it is not going to be
installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

The general setting of my system is:

Linux localhost 3.13-1-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.13.7-1 (2014-03-25) x86_64
GNU/Linux

My apt sources.list looks like:

deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ testing main contrib non-free
deb-src http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ testing main contrib non-free

I read the recommendation given by Fabian Greffrath about being patient
until inkscape 0.91-5+b2 migrates to testing but according to aptitude it's
already in version 0.91-5+b2. However, it still doesn't install properly.

Do you guys have any suggestion to fix this?

I'm open to provide more details about my particular system configuration.

Thanks in advance,

Diego

Apart from the inkscape issue. Could you please tell us which packages
from d-m.o you really need? Because, you know, we have already
incorporated many of them into the official Debian archive and would
really like to know which ones are considered missing.

It's a bit unfortunate that Debian doesn't do mass rebuilds of all
packages, so transitions could happen "at once". Instead, packages are
rebuilt one after another, often after manual intervention, and thus
reach testing one after another, rendering packages in testing
uninstallable until other rebuilt packages follow...

Not sure what you mean here. But raising the finger while being vague
about what features are considered missing (first paragraph) or what
issues are encountered with other packages (second paragraph) is
unfortunately not very helpful. :/

Hi,

Thank you for the info!

I'm not a new Debian user: when I said I removed deb-multimedia, I
implicitly meant I removed all its packages too, although I reinstalled
them after I realized deb-multimedia was innocent -- because I needed them.

I think you might know that the problem is deeper than Inkscape's case.
Several reports could be made for packages that aren't even remotely
related to deb-multimedia.

Last but not least, I like Debian and hope it won't have a fate like
that of Gnome3, although I see similarities in attitudes nowadays.

* Have you done an upgrade and dist-upgrade recently?

* Have you taken the opportunity to remove packages that are no longer
installable? There's a chance that you have old libraries around that you no
longer need. (apt-get autoremove can help with this).

* Have you actually removed the packages from deb-multimedia? You said
earlier that you removed that entry from your sources.list but that is not
the same thing as removing the problematic packages. The output of "aptitude

This is precisely the sort of problems that having packages from deb-
multimedia.org installed causes. (Those packages are also good at causing
random crashes that are very hard to debug -- it's not hard to see why
maintainers aren't interested in bug reports from systems that have these
packages installed).

Please, pay a visit to:

You'll discover that it's not my personal point of view about dmo, but

If this is a real question, you could ask Manjaro's maintainers. The
same "transition" happened there and I didn't even notice it. Not a
single broken package! Or is Manjaro sh*t too, as Matteo believed about

This is not enough. You will also have to remove all packages installed
from these repositories.

Though, as has already been pointed out several times in this bug
report, it does not help in this specific case. The solution is to wait
until (1) libraries have migrated to testing and (2) packages rebuilt
against migrated libraries have migrated to testing.

If you are using Debian testing, you are using a rolling release.
Either you get over the fact that it is "rolling" or you should use
stable instead.

Say, how would you organize a C++ ABI transition that affects some 1000
packages then?

Also, applauding for the "excellent work" being done at d-m.o and at
the same time complaining about lack of coordination among maintaners
isn't going to support your point.

Dear maintainers, if by "unofficial repositories" you mean the excellent
work that is being done at "deb-multimedia.org", it's not to be blamed:
the current mess persists after removing it from "sources.list". I have
a working system only because I use Synaptic to upgrade packages one by one.

IMHO, the word "transition" has become a widespread excuse for the poor
maintenance. Each maintainer MAY do his/her job well enough but the lack
of coordination is obvious.

your hardware problems are a totally unrelated issue.
i understand that this issue is the reason why you are mixing both
"stable" aka "jessie" (which seems to work fine for you) and "testing"
aka "stretch" (picking the parts you want updated).

but this doesn't mean that Debian supports such a setup, (and as a
consequence: that bugs caused by this setup are valid).

furthermore, you have plenty of other repositories outside of debian
enabled.
some of them are known to make problems (e.g. deb-multimedia), that's
why you might get heated replies about them.
others are from other distributions (e.g. linuxmint).
others are totally unknown.

if you have only a single package installed from any of those
non-Debian repositories, this package might depend on a certain
version that is *conflicting* with an official package like 'inkscape'
as found in testing, making it uninstallable.

so who do you think is to blame?

so to conclude:
a large eco-system like an entire operating system with thousands of
libraries and applications is a complex system.
it takes a lot of man power to make all its components work together.
Debian does this work.
if you (the user) deliberately replaces some of it's components, then
Debian cannot be held responsible for any damage you do to your system.

that's why your bug report is considered invalid and has been closed.

the good news is: even though you have tampered with your system, it
still is consistent (everything works). it just won't let you install
things that are known to break your existing setup (this is the actual
reason why you cannot install 'inkscape').
/this doesn't mean however, that

finally:
there *is* a way to install newer versions of (selected) packages on a
"stable" system. it's called "backports", and provides specially buit
packages that integrate into e.g. "jessie".

  http://backports.debian.org/

note however, that backports only provides a small subset of the
~5 packages available in Debian.

and of course (to reiterate what others have already said): if you do
want to have support from Debian, you need to first /use Debian/: that
means uninstalling all packages from unofficial (wrt Debian)
repositories and disabling all unofficial repositories.

Do you really believe that simply dropping this information in a bug
report about inkscape will help?

> Please write me if you need more information.

I believe that _you_ need more information.

The inkscape package depends on some libaries that are entangled in a
_huge_ ABI transition that is currently going on in unstable. This
transition involves renaming of the library packages and conflicting
with the old versions. While some of the libraries that inkscape
depends on have already migrated to testing, the inkscape package that
has been rebuilt against these libraries (version 0.91-5+b2) has not
yet.

As I have already suggested yesterday, please be patient until inkscape
0.91-5+b2 migrates to testing.

The problem is not resolved (the test are below).

Regarding the hybrid configuration, I think it is a problem because
there not exists the last version of a library but your are branching
them so my Linux "lives" using some library from a branch and some
library from another branch. It seems to me that is not a good
practice if you want that Debian will continues to be a Linux leader.

Moreover, a pure Debian testing freezes on a Supermicro board after
the installation at the first reboot. The problem has born during
these day so I think that it is bind to the new Debian release. The
board works fine with the last LST Ubuntu Server distribution (and
worked fine using Debian testing before of September 2015).

Please write me if you need more information.

Though in a clean stretch chroot it does install.

This could very well be the cause, if it's not only the reposiotory
precence but the system is actually hibryd.

Also try with something like

# apt-get install inkscape -t testing
or
# apt-get install inkscape -t stretch

in the past few weeks, Debian has seen a major transition (of the core
components for any C++-related software in Debian) that affected *many*
packages and included the renaming of some dependencies of inkscape.
only within the last days, this big change started migrating from
"unstable" to "testing".

this basically means big disruption which should eventually go away
"automatically", once all packages have been transitioned from unstable
to testing.

in the meantime you could try using a better dependency resolver, e.g.
by intalling the packages with aptitude:

# aptitude udpate
# LC_ALL=C.UTF-8 aptitude install inkscape

i also see that you are running a mixed jessie/stretch (aka
"stable/testing") system, which i don't think is supported at all (i
think that one of the reasons for this is exactly because it is
impossible to support working systems that depend on a state both
*before* and *after* such big transitions we are currently seeing).

This is most likely because of the libatkmm-1.6-1 -> libatkmm-1.6-1v5
transition. You better wait until inkscape 0.91-5+b2 has arrived at
testing.

Please keep in mind that this is the Debian BTS.
Most of the people reading this can't understand Italian, so you're
always better at reporting erros in English.
A way to do this is to put 'LC_ALL=C.UTF-8' (or just 'LC_ALL=C') right
before the command you're invoking, for example
LC_ALL=C.UTF-8 apt install inkscape

Yeah, I do need more information.
I can install inkscape on a sid system without a single problem.

So I have to ask you:

1) Which debian release are you using? debian testing?
2) Please try to disable all those external repositories and retry.

Moreover I'm perfectly able to install inkscape in an up-to-date sid and
stretch clean chroot.

Bug#798341: [inkscape] impossible to install inkscape

2015-09-08 Thread Marco Righi
Package: inkscape
Version: 0.91-5
Severity: important

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---
Hi,
if I try to install inkscape I got some errors on dependences (follows
the complete list).

I check the first two libraries and I noticed that the name is slightly
changed:
- from libatkmm-1.6-1 to libatkmm-1.6-1v5
- from libcairomm-1.0-1 to libcairomm-1.0-1v5

I seguenti pacchetti hanno dipendenze non soddisfatte:
inkscape : Dipende: libatkmm-1.6-1 (>= 2.22.1) ma non sta per essere
installato
Dipende: libcairomm-1.0-1 (>= 1.6.4) ma non sta per essere
installato
Dipende: libglibmm-2.4-1c2a (>= 2.44.0) ma non sta per
essere installato
Dipende: libgtkmm-2.4-1c2a (>= 1:2.24.0) ma non sta per
essere installato
Dipende: libmagick++-6.q16-5 (>= 8:6.8.9.6) ma non sta per
essere installato
Dipende: libpangomm-1.4-1 (>= 2.36.0) ma non sta per essere
installato
Dipende: libsigc++-2.0-0c2a (>= 2.2.0) ma non sta per essere
installato
E: Impossibile correggere i problemi, ci sono pacchetti danneggiati
bloccati.

Please contact me if you need more informations.
