I reinstalled the latest gscan2pdf-version from the yakkety repository which is 1.5.0 by now, renamed ~/.gscan2pdf and the programm is running just fine. Plus: the original issue is solved in this version of gscan2pdf. Changing the scanning resolution is now persistant. Thanks a lot for the support and the great application!

Bug#812884: gscan2pdf: Changing the resolution is not persistant
(Sorry for being so slow to cooperate on this bug. I only have access to this computer from time to time.) I installed gscan2pdf 1.4.0 from the Ubuntu yakkety repository and it crashes as soon as I start the application. On the command line, I get: > gscan2pdf > Can't use string ("gimp %i") as an ARRAY ref while "strict refs" in use at > /usr/bin/gscan2pdf line 4160. > Perl exited with active threads: > 2 running and unjoined > 0 finished and unjoined > 0 running and detached Gimp is installed on the computer.

You don't need the latest Perl or the latest version of any of the dependencies to try out the latest gscan2pdf. Just try the .deb for the latest gscan2pdf, and if it doesn't start, give me the error messages from the command line, and we'll work from there.

I started to upgrade the dependencies too, but soon got entangled in a net of dependencies and decided, I’d better roll back. I would have to upgrade so many packages manually, I fear I would endanger the stability of my productive machine. Is there no other way to test the latest version? As to using the PPA: I’m not shure if this would work, since it doesn’t include the latest perl etc. packages I need to run the latest gscan2pdf. What can I do?

In fact, I was only reporting the bug from my Ubuntu machine but I use gscan2pdf on a Debian machine. I noticed now that this reporting-from-the-other-computer was not very clever. I’m sorry about that. How do I try the most recent version of gscan2pdf in Debian? Can I also use the PPA?

I see that you are using Ubuntu, not Debian. Please install the latest version from the PPA[1]. If you can still reproduce the bug, start gscan2pdf from the command line with the --log=log option, open the scan dialog, quit, and post the log file. Bug#812884: gscan2pdf: Changing the resolution is not persistant
Package: gscan2pdf Version: 1.2.3-1 Severity: normal When I start gscan2pdf, the resolution for scanning is at 50. This is very low and I increase it every time I use the application. I’d like my choice to be the default value for the next time I start the application. This would save me the extra work of changing the resolution every single time. -- System Information: Debian Release: jessie/sid APT prefers trusty-updates APT policy: (500, 'trusty-updates'), (500, 'trusty-security'), (500, 'trusty') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Foreign Architectures: i386 Kernel: Linux 3.13.0-76-generic (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=de_DE.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=de_DE.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages gscan2pdf depends on: ii imagemagick 8:6.7.7.10-6ubuntu3 ii libconfig-general-perl 2.52-1 ii libgoo-canvas-perl 0.06-1build3 ii libgtk2-ex-simple-list-perl 0.50-2 ii libgtk2-imageview-perl 0.05-1build3 ii libhtml-parser-perl 3.71-1build1 ii liblist-moreutils-perl 0.33-1build3 ii liblocale-gettext-perl 1.05-7build3 ii liblog-log4perl-perl 1.41-1.1ubuntu1 ii libpdf-api2-perl 2.020-2 ii libproc-processtable-perl0.50-1 ii libreadonly-perl 1.04-1 ii librsvg2-common 2.40.2-1 ii libsane-perl 0.05-2build1 ii libset-intspan-perl 1.19-1 ii libtiff-tools4.0.3-7ubuntu0.3 ii libtry-tiny-perl 0.19-1 ii perlmagick 8:6.7.7.10-6ubuntu3 ii sane-utils 1.0.23-3ubuntu3.1 Versions of packages gscan2pdf recommends: ii cuneiform 1.1.0+dfsg-4 ii djvulibre-bin 3.5.25.4-3 ii gocr 0.49-1 ii libgtk2-ex-podviewer-perl 0.18-1 ii sane 1.0.14-9 ii unpaper0.4.2-1 ii xdg-utils 1.1.0~rc1-2ubuntu7.1 gscan2pdf suggests no packages.
