I don't think so.

I think so too.

Well, they obviously do, for some reason :(

Yeah, but do you actually need or use ZONE_DEVICE?

Even DAX doesn't actually need it except for some special cases, iirc.

I don't think distributions should necessarily enable it at all yet.

Yes, but that's 4.6 of later. And unlikely to be marked for back porting to
stable.

So *eventually* we'll support that combination, but for now...

Did that twice today. Not there yet :( Looks like the bottom line is:

"Apparently there is some work under way to allow both ZONE_DEVICE
(needed for DAX) and ZONE_DMA (needed by the sound drivers) to be
supported in the same kernel configuration."

Yes there is:

  * [amd64] mm,nvdimm: Disable ZONE_DMA; enable ZONE_DEVICE, NVDIMM_PFN
- This disables drivers for some AC'97 sound cards

That's exactly what it is.  In unstable, which is called that for a

The features that I enabled conflict with ZONE_DMA which is required by
these sound drivers.

If that conflict is removed then I'll happily enable them again.

Wooh. That was fast ;) I'll try to beat Ben to it ;) Tomorrow...
Too late now.

Still, I really wonder what the debian changelog motivation behind it
might be. Various applications work much nicer with 4.3.5-1, than
ever. I read in the kernel log:

commit 5c408fee254633a5be69505bc86c6b034f871ab4
Author: Maciej S. Szmigiero

This unbreaks AC'97 register access.

commit 25e5ef974c33f1e4a07a68bf830e6493ee6dab11
Author: Maciej S. Szmigiero
Date: Sun Dec 20 21:34:29 2015 +0100
...
ASoC: fsl-asoc-card: use different route map for AC'97 mode

fsl_ssi uses different stream names ("AC97 Playback" / "AC97 Capture")
in AC'97 mode so in this case fsl-asoc-card route map should
also be using them.

But, I can't see that _does explain_ the:

   * [amd64] mm,nvdimm: Disable ZONE_DMA; enable ZONE_DEVICE, NVDIMM_PFN
 - This disables drivers for some AC'97 sound cards

nor justifies the action. Ben, care to explain?

There are people working upstream on solving this issue:

http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.kernel.mm/145039/

So you could stick with the Jessie 3.16 kernel (don't use 4.3,
because that won't receive security updates) until this is
fixed in a future kernel version.

Christian

If I read this right, this seems to be a Debian kernel configuration
choice rather than anything else.

Does it work if you just compile your own kernel?

Alright, but not obvious to me.

So, what is to do about that? Stay on 4.3.5-1 for as long as I'm
happy with keeping this nice, working, piece of electronix:

Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB Live! EMU10k1 (rev 07)
Subsystem: Creative Labs SBLive! Player 5.1

vintage 1999, or throw it away? Do things need to be killed before
they're dead? Oh, well. Rethoric questions, maybe. I do have the
money to add some more stuff to the junk yard :(

I once heard a story about a printer that started a movement.
Hopefully, the history might repeat itself.

Yes, I'm hit by this one too. The kernel image was simply not built
with full support for the emu10k1 cards:

/boot/config-4.3.0-1-amd64:CONFIG_GAMEPORT_EMU10K1=m
/boot/config-4.3.0-1-amd64:CONFIG_SND_EMU10K1_SEQ=m
/boot/config-4.3.0-1-amd64:CONFIG_SND_EMU10K1=m
/boot/config-4.3.0-1-amd64:CONFIG_SND_EMU10K1X=m

/boot/config-4.4.0-1-amd64:CONFIG_GAMEPORT_EMU10K1=m
/boot/config-4.4.0-1-amd64:# CONFIG_SND_EMU10K1_SEQ is not set

No mention of that in the changelog.

Yes, moreover, the level of output from pulseaudio verbose mode is too
much for normal usage so it cannot be automatically included.

Second attempt is to do `ls /dev/snd/control*` , and run `udevadm info
$controlfile` for each result.

But, I somehow missed over the fact that in the initial bug report,
one of the attachments shows alsa knows nothing of the sound blaster.
If alsa does not know about it, then neither will pulseaudio. This
most likely is a problem in the kernel, so I am reassigning there and
CCing the kernel list.

The emu10k1 (or emu10k1x) driver (for the sound blaster) is not
loaded, so this is almost certainly a kernel problem.

Hi,

Splendid. I appreciate it can be a pain having to ask for data, but it
is much easier to send it what is asked for and will be useful than to
try and guess ahead of time and inundate with useless stuff.

Sound blaster is definitely still there, witness that it is in the
lspci listing and it works fine in earlier kernels.

09:02.0 Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB Live! EMU10k1

09:02.1 Input device controller: Creative Labs SB Live! Game Port (rev

Which seems a bit terminal. Shall I reboot to 4.3.0 and do the same for
comparison?

Thanks, that is useful.

The log contains:

module-udev-detect.c: Found 1 cards.

And no trace of the sound blaster. The code suggests that this is
either because it is no longer in the sound subsystem, or that the
path does not have an id[1].

What is the output of:

ls -d /sys/devices/*/*/sound/*

And for each of those paths, what is the output of:

udevadm info -p $path

?

Also please attach the output of `lsmod | grep snd`

The logs attached indeed do only show the HDMI Nvidia card. Could you
attach a pulseaudio verbose log[1]? This may give a hint on why it
doesn't pick up the card.

This can be forwarded, but first please attach the log.

I have tried rebooting to kernel 4.2, 4.3 as well as 4.4. This is only
a problem for kernel 4.4, things works fine using kernels 4.3 and 4.2.

I also get similar problems when booting to Fedora, there though kernel
4.4 works fine and kernel 4.5 fails.

This may not be a pulseaudio problem per se. Should I raise a new bug
report or can this one be relocated to get to the people that need to
look at it?
