There was a "blacklist nvidia" if you check the report that was sent
originally, but it was in a backup file so it was _probably_ ignored.

Interesting. Do you have installed xserver-xorg-legacy by any chance?

Were they wrong? I only recall having commented/uncommented those
related to nouveau and nvidia.

$HOME/.local/share/xorg doesn't exist in my system!

Seems fair.
Thanks!

Hi,

Thanks for the update.

I also noticed later that you had some extra blacklists in
the /etc/modprobe.d directory. Also nowadays the Xorg log lives in
$HOME/.local/share/xorg so if you see the problem again please attach
the logs from there (I've updated the script to fetch it but it will
take a while to get into the distro).

For housekeeping's sake I'll close the bug for now since you don't have
the issue at the moment, please reopen it if you face it again.

Kind regards,
Luca Boccassi

Bug#833895: nvidia-legacy-340xx-driver: blank screen after upgrade

2016-08-16 Thread Luis Mochan
Dear Luca,
As your comments hinted at a misconfiguration and it had been a very
long time since I had used that machine, I ran a live jessie debian
distribution and the X-windows system worked with the nvidia driver,
but only in the failsafe mode. I decided then to make a fresh install of
jessie and later upgraded to stretch. I haven't installed nvidia yet,
but nouveau hadn't worked and it is working properly now, so the
crisis of my T61 is over. I still don't know if nvidia-legacy would
work now in my machine. I'll try it later.
Thanks.
Luis

Should there?

Yes. Nevertheless, I don't even get to the login screen, so the
problem appears before I'm become user. I tried adding lightdm to the
group video, but it didnt work either.

> What is the output of "getfacl /dev/dri/card0"?

mochan@fmunu:~$ getfacl /dev/dri/card0
getfacl: Removing leading '/' from absolute path names
# file: dev/dri/card0
# owner: root
# group: video
user::rw-
group::rw-
other::---

> Are you running systemd + logind?

Running ps -e returns the lines:

mochan@fmunu:~$ ps -e|grep systemd
  862 ?00:00:00 systemd-udevd
 4288 ?00:00:00 systemd-logind
but the program with pid=1 is init.
Is there another test to better find out?

Thanks and best regards,
Luis

Hi,

I cannot reproduce on a fresh amd64 sid install with a gtx 780, so
downgrading severity as most likely cause is hardware or setup
dependent.

I notice in the device permissions that there is no user ACL bit set:

Device node permissions:
crw-rw 1 root video 226, 0 Aug 9 21:32 /dev/dri/card0
crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 195, 0 Aug 9 21:32 /dev/nvidia0
crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 195, 255 Aug 9 21:32 /dev/nvidiactl
video:x:44:mochan,david,luquesnel,elias,gatis,david,irina

Is your user one of those listed in the "video" group?
What is the output of "getfacl /dev/dri/card0"?
Are you running systemd + logind?

Kind regards,
Luca Boccassi

Bug#833895: nvidia-legacy-340xx-driver: blank screen after upgrade

2016-08-09 Thread Luis Mochan
Package: nvidia-legacy-340xx-driver
Version: 340.96-9
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Dear Maintainer,

I upgraded my system today. I received a warning that the nvidia driver
wouldn't work anymore with my old card
and that I should install the legacy-340xx package. After installation I chose
the legacy package with the
updage-glx program. During installation I had some problems as I hadn't
installed the appropriatte linux-headers
package installed, but after I did, reinstalled the driver and booted the
system I finally got to see the green NVIDIA
logo flash momentarily in my screen. But then, I get a blank screen and my
laptop becomes unresponsive to its keyboard.
The system is running though, and I looged into it with ssh to write this
message.

Best regards,
Luis
