Bug#891578: xscreensaver often slows down, taking 1+ minute to respond to keystrokes, Xorg 100% CPU

2018-04-21 Thread js jb
This problem is still present with the new nvidia-driver (390.42) and
xserver-xorg (1.7.7+19).
I now believe this is an issue either with the nvidia driver for 32 bit linux
or with xorg rather than xscreensaveras I have found another application,
flightgear, that show exactly the same symptoms when runin full screen mode.
Both xscreensaver and flightgear run fine in a window but slow down to a crawl
in full screen modeonce X windows has been running continuously for 10+ days.
Restarting X fixes the problem for another10 days or so.
thanks,--jack

Bug#891578: xscreensaver often slows down, taking 1+ minute to respond to keystrokes, Xorg 100% CPU

2018-02-26 Thread js
Package: xscreensaver
Version: 5.36-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

==

After upgrading to nvidia-driver 384.111, I've noticed that after the X
server has been running for a few days, running xscreensaver can
sometimes slow down enormously, taking more than 1 minute just to
respond to a keystroke and bring up a dialog box to unlock.

At those times, getting into the system with ssh shows Xorg is at 100%
of CPU (for one core).

None of the other graphics-intensive applications, like flightgear or
playing videos in full screen mode, show any such problem on the system.
This also happens when running the Preview in xscreensaver-demo (for full
screen mode) but do not happen when xscreensaver-demo is NOT in full
screen mode.

These are the versions of nvidia-driver and xserver-xorg-core in use:
ii nvidia-driver 384.111-1 i386
 NVIDIA metapackage
ii xserver-xorg-core 2:1.19.6-1 i386
Xorg X server - core server

When this slowdown happens, getting out of X Windows and restarting X
fixes the problem (for a few days). Note that the system boots in
console mode and X is started manually, so this is not the same as
rebooting the system.

[I realize this could be a problem with the nvidia driver or with the X
server but since xscreensaver is the only graphics application showing
this behavior, it seemed the logical place to start.]
