Thanks! I've uploaded this to experimental, but not unstable yet (sorry, I only have a test environment for GNOME 3.29 right now). Any GNOME team members who are still able to test 3.28 are welcome to upload the same change to unstable. smcv

Journalctl shows many lines: Failed to set CRTC mode 1200x1920: No space left on device Searxing the message leads to https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/issues/216 and a patch https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/merge_requests/175.diff I tested the patch on the Debian package and it seems to work well on my machine.
